Prolapse M/F

Are male chameleons more prone to prolapse? It seems like every time I see one on the forums it's a male. Is this a hemipenile thing? I ask because I am in the very early stages of considering another chameleon and I've only had females in the past. My girls have been / are so sweet, and I just love them so, but I'm considering a male. I know females are the "hard" ones, but I have a short list about males that I have concerns over. Like sperm plugs / hemi sheds.

I’ve noticed one of my male panthers tends to put it out there when he poops. It makes me nervous every time because I panic thinking he had prolapsed… But he usually retracts it after a minute or so after pooping.

Out of 5 boys i’ve not had any problems. I wouldn’t let that scare you off.

If your husbandry is on point I do not think you need to stress any issues with hemipenes or prolapses. Seems way more common when husbandry is off. Especially sperm plugs not shedding correctly. When they are hydrated correctly and their levels are on point these shed without issue.

Females that have developed follicular stasis or eggbinding are prone to prolapsing fairly frequently...but personally I've seen/heard of more males prolapsing.

Thank you for the links! After going through what I did with Cozas liver infection, I am cautious and want to plan for everything. However I feel confident I can provide any vet care needed having found an amazing chameleon vet and having a little first hand emergency care experience.
