Progress with simbas eye issue

Gave the mistking a thorough clean yesterdy with viv cleaner so I know that's bac free.

Going to change his live plant now from the ficus (sap can cause eye issues and loads of the leaves have been falling off!) to a couple of split leaf philodendrons.

As calci plus not here yet, got vit a capsules at advice of hoj (thank u) so will put a tiny drop on a fruit grub after I've changed plant to get it in him until supplement arrives. Then will use calcium only and repashy calci plus, alternating at each feed so he'll get each one twice a week because of how often he eats. ( I think any more than that such as using calci plus at every feed will be too much - what do u think?) His feeders are well gutloaded.

If none of the above make an improvement with the eye swelling, the vets it is!

Will keep u posted ;)

Well, all done....

Plants all changed. Shame they only had medium ones as the foliage only goes about half way up his enclosure. Haven't decided whether to just leave them to grow(as I read they grow quickly) or get another plant to put some foliage in and around the top vines. What do u think? (Vid of new plants in enclosure)

Simba was obviously not impressed at the clean out but I think I made amends when I fed him! I say that because, literally about 2 seconds after I held the fruit grub in front of him ( which I'm pleased to say was the one with the vit a drop on it as well as calcium) he grabbed it, squishing guts all over his mouth, and gobbled it up like he never gets fed!! I think they might be a fave of his! Lol he got really excited!

Got this lil vid of him eating the second one ( u can really see the swelling on his eyes in this too, although quality of vid not great)

The third one ended up in the feeder bowl as he wasn't interested after I held it up to the point of my arm falling off. Obviously rather filling those grubs! :p

So, I guess I'll c what he's like tomorrow, see if there's any improvement now he has a super clean enclosure and mistking, irritant free plants and has had a dose of vit a.

Fingers crossed he doesn't need the vet again!

Try to get some further info about the split leaf Philo. I had one in Chazam's cage and I believe it was Seeco that stated they were toxic. I was confused by that statement as I've seen the plant listed on FLchams safe plant list. Just a heads up.

I didn't/couldn't find anything to verify the statement, but Seeco is a respected and established breeder. Needless to say, I'm currently not using the philo...

I found a post advising monstera and philodendrons are in fact different plants.

It advises after 1 year the toxicity of philo is very low, while monstera is not toxic and is on MANY safe plant lists.

The label on the plants I got today says monstera so I'm happy they are safe.

Thanks for the heads up tho ;)

Good luck with the new plants. Liked the vids, kind of funny how you had to kind of twitch your hand to gets his attention of you :p

Some pics from earlier. Got a few with his eyes in different positions so u can see the baggy/puffy bits better:

Considering some fake foliage for the top area until plants grow as looks a bit bare. What do u think?

Some close ups too (even after a clean out resulting in half the foliage he had, and the eye issue he still sat there in his happy colours! :D)

I've noticed that where yesterday his eyes looked very puffed up and swollen, this morning the skin that was ballooned up just looks saggy.

Hoping its a sign of improvement?

Will monitor him today and after a day of usual mistings, see how he looks.

I've also made a feeding and supplementation record for him too. Now I'm changing his supp. schedule I want to make sure I don't give him too much vit a.

Think it'll also be interesting to record what feeders and how many he has and how they are gutloaded, as well as what they're dusted with. U never know, it might come in handy one day?? ;)

Popped a couple of fake foliage plants in for him until the live plants grow.
Looked a bit bare around the top so I thought he'd be grateful for a few more hiding places ;)

That first picture looks sort of like, hi mom, I am getting up. He is such a beautiful Cham.

I have always researched plants to see if they are safe for kids and pets, cat, dog ect. I have yet to have a problem checking plants that way. I did have a problem with a plant off a safe plant list, so now I do my own research.

It does look like his eye is a bit better. The sagging is not as worrisome as the swelling. Hope he is on the road to recovery.

Thought I'd get a couple more eye pics now he's experienced a full days worth of misting sessions.
Managed to catch him just before he settled down to sleep:

I can't work out if it's the angle of the pic, the fact he's hidden behind the vine, or if there is in fact an improvement, but I think it looks way better!

Ahhh, hope his eye gets better. What is the prime suspect do you think that caused it.
It does look better in the last pics.

Thanks Laurie/Hoj. Fingers crossed it continues to improve! ;)

Could be a number of things:

Vit A defficiency? - Gave preformed Vit A drop on feeder yesterday which could have improved his condition.
Ficus Plant? - Removed this as sap is known to cause eye irritation and replaced with Monsterra and fake plants.
Bacteria in Mistking? - Thoroughly cleaned out the whole system with antibac viv cleaner and thoroughly rinsed.
Water - I had wondered if boiling the water in the kettle had resulted in a build up of lime in the water or some other mineral/residue from the kettle. I'm therefore just using hot tap water at the moment, which normally cools before the mistking comes on but when it does spray the hot water through it results in a warm mist. Im considering one of those jugs with the built in filters to put the water I use for him through?? What do you think?? Would this get rid of bacteria too?

Who knows the exact cause?? I probably should have changed 1 thing at a time to try and work out exactly what it was but I just wanted to do everything I could as quickly as I could to get his eyes back to normal!

Will continue to post on his progress over the next coming week.
