probe therm placement...?

Ok so I've been monitoring my temps and RH for a month or so now to make sure all is right for new panther. I have a digital temp/hygrometer at the bottom to get the ambient but recently decided to go get a probe therm for basking spot because the more I read about baby temps the more worried I became about burning the lil' man. I was using a crappy analog at basking level and it always reads 85F. Well when I positioned the new therm (in same spot) today it was friggin 102F!! Needless to say I changed things around. Here is a pic of a lower position on basking spot with reading at 84F. So Q is, is this the proper position for a reading? Meaning, is this where the probe should be placed on his stick? Also the "new" much cooler position is no longer directly under the light and there is no way he can now be directly under (hard to see that in these pics tho). I also had to switch from a 75w to a 60w. therm1.jpg

What gauge are you using now? I have been looking around for one because I thought mine was doing the same.

I picked up a exoterra probe therm because all the analog meters I have were way off by ~5F. I was using (analog) exoterra before. I also use a Acu-rite digital hygrometer/therm at the mid to bottom for ambient temp and RH. Plan to get another duo exoterra temp/hygo digital, because lets face it... cant skimp on these measurements ;)
