probe for thermostat

i recently purchased a 4ft x 2ft viv for my veild chameleon. its all wooden apart from glass doors. ive had the chameleon for 5 months and was in a really small tank but was with correct lighting but with no thermostat.

now ive got a on off thermostat which im not keen on. chameleon has only been in there for 2 days and doesnt seem to be moving much and not in basking spot. was thinking maybe taking time to settle in but would rather be safe than sorry.

ive got the probe in the middle half way down is this right?
