pressure treated wood for stand

I know your aren't supposed to use pressure treated wood for a cage because of the carcinogens and arsenic level.. But is it ok to use it for the stand?.. it will be under the cages and they will never have access to it.. just wanted to know if it is acceptable to use for the stand before I build. I already have my cages started and the stand will be up next.

Thanks

Shaun

Yes, that's fine.

The big issue to me is to not sue pressure treated lumber where your cham might drink water that has touched it - the water can leach some of the chemicals from the wood. If it's outside your cham's cage, there's no issue. Not all pressure treatments are arsenic containing FYI, but they are all nasty chemicals.

What if you put varnish over the wood, air it out completely, would that be considered safe?

Presure treated wood

I hope the stand is for outside. Pressure treated wood is for contact with concrete or masonry surfaces so it will not rot and the termites wont cross it.
I was a carpenter for 25 years and the smell of that pressure treatment used to almost make me sick. Don't handle the stuff too much or breathe what you cut. It is toxic and kills termites. It will stain your floor as well.
If I were building something I would use Redwood, Douglass fir, pine or some of the hardwoods like poplar.
Good Luck and send us some pics of the project.

It can't be "aired out" really, and if you are going to varnish it anyway, I wouldn't use pressure treated.

Very good point - you don't want to keep pressure treated wood in the house. I had assumed it was for outside, but I shouldn't have. I used oak for my enclosure where visible and pine for anything that was not exposed. I stained everything, and it has held up very well over 2 years of heavy use.
