Hi.

Can any one tell me what a female veiled does when pragnant..
She unbred as I got both as brother and sister and they were parted.
She has a nest box that she digs in and she started digging yesterday.
She walks along the glass front looking as if to get out then climes back in the nest box digs some more then clims up on her vines.
I spray and she has a auto dripper too on a timer.

Thanks for any advice given.
John

Hi John, she may just be digging test holes - my first female dug random holes for 3 days before finding the 'right' place to dig a proper hole. Make sure that the soil or sand is moist enough for her. I would also cover the front of her cage so that she has no distractions from outside! My female kept digging around on the floor at the bottom (outside) of her tubs so I had to raise the floor of her cage so it was level with the top of the laying tubs to fool her into thinking she was at the bottom of her cage! I used empty crix tubs and thick cardboard to create a false floor. It worked a treat!

John I wasn't as lucky as Tiff. My girl could not decide and just dug then quit, dug & quit until she was finally . I do think the key is to give them complete privacy. I am not even sure it is just then so seeing us, but I think they want the closed off safe from the world feel. Good luck, seems like way to much work on infertile eggs, our poor little girls.:(

Hi Tiff.
I've just put a long bath towel over her glass area so she is in darkness.
substrat I use in there is coco fiber (the brick one) and in her nest box it's mixed with sand and it's dump..
I sure she has dug that much the substrat has been kicked over her box But if she needs more it don't take long to give her a a six inche depth if that will help? .. that's how deep her glass area is with out the glass doors.

The deeper the better, although they tend to dig to the bottom no matter how deep it is! I used an empty 4 litre plastic icecream tub for Lily.

Hi - does sound likes she's testing out her digging feet before she gets started for real! Laying bin ideally need to be at least 8 inches deep - it's surprising how deep they can go. Like Miss Lily's cham, we tried to trick our little girl into thinking she could dig 'down' into her tank but she wasn't haven't any of it! We ended up setting up a laying bin using a rubbish or garbage can filled with damp substrate, branches and a plant for privacy. We also placed a basking lamp over the top to keep her warm and set a web cam up so we could watch her progress without disturbing her. This might work for your cham if she still won't lay after a day or two.

it's done

Hi just to let you know she has laid her eggs ( thank god ) and has eaten.
I used a large plastic container ( clearish ) and got potting soil from b&q then micro waved it for 15 minutes to kill anything bad ( four jugs loads ) mixed in water to binde it and then put fake plants around the front edge.
She went in and was like that for three days.
Then today she came out and I looked at the front edge and could see eggs.
I'm over the moon as I would of hated her dieing over ruddy eggs.
So tomorrow I'm getting locust for her and will take out the nest box.
So I'll need to work out how many times she will lay in a year so I'm ready next time.
Panic over with for now..

Regards.
John.

I am glad that she laid them and is ok! My first female only laid two clutches (infertiles) and she laid the second almost 4 months after the first.

Glad to hear that she's ok John. If you keep your female this way:
http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/2007/12/keeping-female-veiled.html and don't allow her to see your male at all....not even look at him, then you should be able to keep her from having another clutch.

Thanks Jan.
She laid 42 eggs and I was shocked to how large they were.
I'm pleased I'm not breeding as the rep shops seem to have too many veiled and bearded dragons for sale lately.

One clutch was bad enough for my nerves lol I felt useless knowing if she didn't lay she could die.
She may be very defencive with her home and let's me know that she isn't a push over even trying to bite me at times lol.
But I still care as she can't tell me any other way to her mood.
when we got them both she was so small and looked like death warmed up I didn't hold much hope of her making it.
Then once the cricket tub was placed in she was the first there picking off the ones she wanted and in days she was looking better and better.
Then she was having a hard time with her brother climbing on her that she would puff up and hiss or head butt him.
Then we ordered another viv to match the first and the day I had to get her she gave me a look that said " don't mess with me " lol .. But once she sure her own viv she was happy and she's been that way ever since.
That's why I called her rainbow because her dark colour means she's not in the hello mood and the light colour means she is happy.
She is just scared I know and I'll respect her wishes and give her the best life I can..

I've had many fem vieled's choose to dig or create a "nest" under or in a plant or wood placed on the substrate. Just for roosting @ night. Not to say she's not laying, but this is normal to me.
