Possibly breed my own cham's food?

Hey everyone,

I've been wondering about this for a while now, but as I'm getting a new cham on the 26th, I thought I'd get started now.

I've heard alot on here about people breeding their own feeders, so what I wanted to know was how to get started??

I'm most interested in how to breed butterworms, hornworms, and i forget the name of the last worm, but it's supposed to have a good calcium: phosphorus ratio....

How do I start? I don't know anything about bugs so anything will help and be greatly appreciated. :)
 
Worms can be difficult to breed. I personally breed dubia roaches. They are the best feeder IMHO, live forever, are hardy, don't climb, don't fly, don't stink, etc. They are super easy and can be gutloaded with just about anything. Nothing you can go wrong with!! :D

I think if you are going to breed worms, silkworms would be the way to go. THey are very simple to breed and you can buy the eggs if you want to start out with to get the egg rearing process established so you know what to do.

The last worm is silkworms :) - a great feeder for chams, low fat too.....I never bred silks myself, they are apparently more hassle than most. The easiest bugs to breed are the roaches and crickets and that's what I started with. A tub, some compost, some food + adult crickets. Keep warm = baby crickets.
For the roaches you don't even need compost.

Lol, I've considered that before but it almost seems like more work than what I can handle... I can't really clean silks that often :eek: From what I heard, you need a few tubs to switch them around in during their different instars.

Awesome, I'll check that out, my mom might kill me if I try to breed those tho! Lol. :rolleyes:

Tell her all the things I said about them! Also, check out my blog! Trust me... your mom will hate crickets wayyy more than she will roaches. I know I do, lol.

They can be, that is why I would just buy a ton of eggs lol

How big do silkworms get? I've ordered some once before and I couldn't even find them :eek: I've heard really good things about those, reptiworms, and pheonix worms.

I've accidently bred crickets before! I could handle that! Pretty sure my mom would kill me with the roaches tho lol, something along the lines of "OMG you brought roaches into my house!! *chase with spatula or nearest weapon of choice*" lol

Logic and reality are sometimes different :) but this one is a myth. They do have a lot of chitin, best not to use them as a staple food, sometimes is fine though.

Silkworms get to 7cm long, big enough for 'most any Cham. Phoenix worms are much smaller, but also really good. Hornworms get biggest I think, but they are illegal here (UK why? Lol)
The trick with roaches is to call them 'Dubia beetles' and hope nobody notices :D

I will! Lol she does hate crickets, i swear if she had it her way our house would be like one of those sterile rooms that you have to take a shower before entering! :rolleyes: Moms. lol

Good! lol I was really freaked on that one, and that the biggest super I've seen is as big as my hand, well almost :p

Oh okay cool! Pascal loved hornworms, the biggest one of those I've seen was i think 5 inches. Thats weird that they're illegal in the UK.. i wonder why..

Lol she would notice I think lol, she's actually pretty cool when it comes to chams, I research something or hear about it and she looks it up too :p
maybe it'll grow on her... she could walk around the house singing la cucaracha hahahahahaha

Your blog made it seem really simple! I think I could do that, and if i kept the dubias in the shed that could be perfect! If they escape from the cham cage however, soy carne muerta. hahaha
