Possible URI ??... Ambanja Female

Well I have a vet appt at 4:45pm today for this girl pictured below.

I have seen her coughing , like a real cough. She did it a few times when I got her a few months back. She is eating and drinking and acting normal. When I noticed the cough I looked and no mucus. I took her out to take some pics and she opened her mouth and I saw lots of fluid (mucus). It is clear but her mouth and throat are full. She makes a wheezing sound when you hold her to open her mouth.

Anyone have any ideas? I will update the thread with what the vet says and treatment.

Here are some pics . The first one is the only one that shows some of the mucus. I just thought I would provide other pics. She looks healthy to me.

That looks and sounds like a moderate URI. The vet will prescribe some antibiotics. Hopefully she does okay on them. Reptaid might help. :)

Good luck!

Uri....

Yes, it's a URI...but the good news is you've got it before she goes downhill. She is still healthy and sturdy looking in her body. You will need antibiotics and you will need to bump up your cage temperature until she recovers. The vet is going to probably ask you to culture it to see exactly what the bacteria is to confirm that whatever antibiotic you leave with kills what she has. He will also swab the gunk out. When you bring her home you can also use a Q-tip to gently swab the back of her throat out to clear away anything else that accumulates while she recovers. Chams can't cough and spit out gunk like we can. It will just sit in there and stew. You just have to make sure you don't push the Q-tip too deep. You put it in and twirl it. The twirling grabs on to the stringy stuff like cotton candy so you can get it out. Also keep that foamy stuff out of her eyes. When she drinks the water action may make it foam out of her mouth onto the side of her face. Wipe or rinse it away. The bacteria can start an eye infection too. She needs extra hydration too when she starts the antibiotic. Good deal on getting the vet appointment. She's a beautiful girl :)

Ryan,
Is that your Brantley baby girl? I'm sure Dr Greek will put you on the right course of treatment. Let us know what he says.

Tylene, that is her.

Thanks Everyone , Dr. Greek has us on a good course of action.

He swabbed the mucus out of her

He held her under the faucet and "washed out her mouth and throat"

We will be giving her Baytril and lots of water for 10 days or so.

Thanks for all the support and helpful information. I will keep everyone posted.

Thats good Ryan, looks like you caught it early. She certainly is a big buff chick! She looks so healthy, I'm sure she'll do fine. Does he want you to increase her temps at all?

Trying to imagine this is quite the funny thing. :p

I hope she gets well soon. :)

Thanks Syn,

It was interesting to watch. If I did the same thing I would have my head cut off by forum members. :D He is the pro and really knows what he is doing. I would not try it myself . She was not happy afterwords.

Ryan, I hope all comes out well and sorry that both you and her are enduring this but how lucky she is to have you on her side.:)

Good news , She is looking all clear. I think we are over the hurdle. She is back to her non wheezing self. Now she can Hiss and not squeak. :)

Ryan, how much Bayatril did you give her and how much does she weigh? I am very glad she pulled through. I know URI's can be fatal, especially for the little ones who have so little reserve.

She weighs about 60g

I gave her baytril by mouth 1 drop a day for about 7-8 days. Dr. Greek recommended to treat her until she was better. Anywhere from 7-10 days or so.

I think this is whats wrong with Leo. he has gone downhill and quickly. I called Elisa and Chris and am unable to get ahold of either. We had a vet appt but had to cancel due to weather, and Im regretting that. I was going to call a cab to take him but the vet office closed at 11 and no emergency vet knows anything about chams... So now Im totally a wreck and fearing the worst.
