possible to be allergic to a cham?

my mom was over and feeding my cham the other day, she was hand feeding, and where his tounge touched her hand got all tingly itchy red and a little swollen, is it possible that shes allergic to him? wasnt even sure if that was possible

it is possible to be allergic to just about anything i mean one of my good friends is allergic to dirt... lol. so be careful sometimes the first reaction isn't that bad but the next can be really bad. if it happens again i would be ready to take her to the doc cause you never know how bad the reaction could be if it happens at all

Animal allergies are not to the skin or fur, but to the proteins in the blood, urine (urates/feces) and saliva. With mammals who groom themselves, they get their saliva on their fur; it then dries and rubs off on humans who transfer it into their eyes, nose, mouth, and skin.

Of course, getting hit with the tongue eliminates all the in between steps and just puts saliva on her hand.

I agree...probably the saliva. If she washed her hand right away it might prevent the reaction. I suppose she should be glad that chams don't like kissing or licking their humans.

reptiles are known to carry salmonela, correct me if i'm wrong. so maybe it's just a small "wart" i get some when she climbs on my arms and what-not.

just be very sanitary wash hands before and after handling to prevent spread of disease between the two of you.

Dang that sucks. How is she doing? Might need an epi pen! I am allergic to a lot of things IE: idonine & shellfish, IB prof, dogs, cats, my african grays! Whats a person to do?

The little welts you mentioned are probably just skin pricks from the fine sharp claw tips, not salmonella. Salmonella is possible from any herp, but more easily picked up from herps who tend to have wet skin or spend much of their time in water (frogs, toads, aquatic turtles) and you have to somehow get the bacteria in contact with your GI tract (such as putting contaminated hands into your mouth, kissing frogs, etc).

I'll be honest, if I knew I had an allergy, I'd wear gloves when I had my hands in the cage. While it's not too bad if it's confined to the hands, it's all too easy to unthinkingly push some hair away from your eyes.

I would say it is the saliva as well. I too am allergic to a lot....one is to puppy and kitten noses When I nuzzle them or kiss them I get like hives that tingles and itches for a few hours and then I am fine. I call it puppy bumps..lol
(I personally think it is the mamas milk I am allergic to and it is just on their little noses from ninny bagging)
