portable ac unit options

It's a hung window that's 60" along the sill (horizontal).
You're right—that's unusually wide for a single/double-hung. 😲
They usually max. out at 48" (which is why I asked). 60" high is not unusual.

Double Hung Window Sizes

Double hung windows are the most common type of replacement window in the United States. They come in a wide range of sizes to fit any rough opening. They are often found in the bedroom, kitchen, hallways, and all over the house. Double-hung window width can be anywhere from 24 to 48 inches. A double hung window’s height can range from 36 to 72 inches.
  • Double Hung Width: 24″ min to 48″ max
  • Double Hung Height: 36″ min to 72″ max

Actually the saga continues because my portable AC unit puts out air that smells very strongly, like chemicals. Might have an issue with its refrigerant? Upon further inspection the fins look all beat up and seems like Amazon might've sent me one that got returned by someone else. So gonna return that. I guess with a window unit we could figure out a solution for the insulation...like plywood and duct tape. 😭
Here are a few solutions. I'm sure there are others.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of using exposed fiberglass—rigid or batt—as some solutions suggest.
I've had personal experience with fiberglass dust making it into the room air—not healthy for lungs & other living things.

Rigid styrofoam (not U-foam with foil) insulation would be much better, IMO, filling any cracks with silicone caulk, and duct-taping if necessary. (Not a fan of U-foam either.)

Thank you!! Will investigate, try again, and report back.

I use a window unit that’s right next to my chams enclosure. It works great to get his temp down to 65 at night in the summer. Good luck and I hope you can figure out a way to put it in the window!

 Doesn't the AC unit have an integral thermostatic control?
This thermostat has day/night cycles unlike the AC unit--at least for my specific model. Before I bought the thermostat, I had to manually turn down the temp. Not anymore. It's a timer but also a thermostat. Essentially you put the AC on the coldest setting (60F for my model) and then the third-party thermostat does all the work. When the room is supposed to warm up, the AC shuts off. And then it turns back on when it gets too warm. And then it will drop the temps down to 60F once the lights go off.

Maybe newer models have day/night cycle. But mine didn't have one built in. Definitely a worthy gadget for units without one.

Thanks for the explanation. TBH, I was thinking the AC would only operate at night, and the house HVAC would take care of daytime. 🤷‍♂️

Definitely makes sense. I still live with my parents and they won't turn the HVAC on in the summertime until it hits 80-85F inside. The summers get hot here. Outside gets up to 112F. Maybe not the wisest choice for me to pick a montane but 🤷‍♂️😅🤣

A Jackson's was my first choice, but I'd have to carry it up & down the basement stairs every day to get the nighttime temp drop. Mebbe if I were 40 years or so younger, but the basement's a little musty anyway... 👃 Probably not good air for any reptile to be breathing...

So I've got Ol' Mr. GrumpyPants to break my XXXXX every day. 🤷‍♂️😅:ROFLMAO:
