Peroxide

Its safe but dont use multiple times a day. Its basically liquid O-zone. So what ever it comes in contact with (mold/bacteria) it will shoot out an oxygen and destroy it. However if used multiple times a day it can cause skin irritation. Its great for a cleaner or adding a little to a water basin.

Awesome, I was thinking once a week or once every two weeks to help with treatments on my chams burn. Ill plan on diluting it as well. Thanks for the info !!!

You're only supposed to use peroxide once, as it'll destroy both bad cells AND new, healthy cells in a wound. So when you scrape your knee, you use it once and then never again, otherwise the wound will just take forever to heal.

So I would not use it as a continued treatment of an injury. Did a vet not prescribe a topical medicine for the burn?

Olimpia is spot on! Peroxide should only be used in the very beginning and only on infected or dirty wounds. After that it is just damaging the healthy cells that are trying to heal. I wouldn't use it on Rex at all, not even infrequently.

I just worry because his burn has split !! A little blood yesterday and I just wanted to use it to clean out the dead cells

If it's bleeding that's because healthy tissue was exposed (dead tissue doesn't have blood supply) so it would do more harm than good, and physically hurt. Don't use it. If it's a burn significant enough to do that then I think you need silvadene to apply to it.

Sounds like you need to put Silvadene cream on the wound daily...I personally wouldn't put peroxide on my cham...but that's just me.

Okay great. Where would silvadene be ? Can you buy it over counter or is it by prescription ?

To my knowledge at least in the US it is script or via vet...but it is like magic on burns

Silverex, Silvazine, Flamazine, Thermazene

Its a silver based antibacterial creme(like silver lined socks). And its prescription only. You can always try a diy mix:
hydrocortisone cream, bacitracin, Benadryl cream and Eucerin cream

Hydrocortisone and benadryl are optional, but will make it heal quicker. The main working ingriedent here is bacitracin for antibacterial. Eucerin is there to help them feel better and not dry out:)

Guess i should have asked a few more questions on the peroxide. Ive only used it for cleaning and like others, on initial cuts and burns.

Thanks for all the info guys !!! I have hydrocortisone cream maybe ill take a break from the poly sporn and try a little of that. All in all he has an upcoming check up with the vet anyways

- Bump - Looking for a vet or an experienced rescurer to answer. After using the diluted low dose watered down iodine and polysporn the burnt flesh seemed to disappear. Should we stop with iodine ? Rex's skin is cracking a little. I put some hydrocortizone on it tonight and some of the skin seems to be falling off.

You have had both tell you what to do;) Ferret is a vet and experienced keeper and I am fairly experienced. Olimpia is also very experienced and a Mod on the board.

Also if asking for advice on a wound pictures always help.

All that said most experienced keepers haven't had that many instances of treating burns, because we don't allow our chams to get burned.

I'm not an Cham expert but with dogs I have used neosporin in the past.ay e it's worth a shot? The member ferretinmyshoes is a veterinarian. You could always ask her personally :)

DO NOT use iodine for same reasons Ferret described w hydrogen peroxide, it kills healthy cells as well. Best OTC treatment is plain bacitracin twice a day. It's even better than Silvadene as long term use of Silvadene can cause electrolyte problems.

I am a vet. And have given you my professional advice several times. If you are not going to pursue getting silvadene from your vet you need to continue with the diluted iodine, which has dual effects against bacteria and fungi. But it too should only be in the earlier stages. I dont remember when this happened but if it's been more than a week you can stop it. The biggest problem with burns is the secondary bacterial or fungal infection that can come with them because the integrity of the skin's natural defenses are impaired by the damage from the burn. Neosporin helps protect the wound from invading bacteria as well as prevent bacterial growth and keep the wound moist so it doesn't hurt so bad. Silvadene is even more effective than those combined. Hydrocortisone isn't going to do much and I wouldn't use it at all. I don't really know what else to tell you.

Ill stick to what I have been doing until his vet visit in a few weeks ... How often should I do this ? Still daily
