Parents won't take Cham to vet

My Cham Luna has a mouth infection and when I proceeded to ask my dad to take him to the vet he said why? It's not like I'd take a fish to the vet which made me extremely mad because he spends all the money in the world on my sisters horse like I'm talking 700-1000$ every 4 months or so but he won't take my Cham that means as much to me as that horse to my sister and he said he will take me to the local reptile store to see what they said and they convinced my dad to order reptaid and rot guard and give it 14 days Do you think this will clear it up or should I start selling some of my spare tanks to pay for a vet visit? :(

Hi! I'm sorry your parents are being this way. I'm also sorry that your chameleon is having problems.

I would say, yes, start selling spare tanks, taking jobs walking dogs, do whatever you need to do to get the money yourself. Not only is this the right thing to do, it just might make your parents revisit the idea of helping out.

My parents took me one time but every time I tell them I think he has mouth rot (these are examples) or respritory infection my mom would think that its impossible for a chameleon to get sick

Reptaid isn't guaranteed, I don't think i'd rely on it for something major. I agree with Eliza, do what you can to earn the money yourself - maybe if daddy see's how much it means to you, and how hard your trying he'll even pitch in, but if not you might be able to make it on your own.

I wish you and your cham luck.

...and selling your bike and skateboard and baseballs and bats and surfboard and so on. Vet visits and medicine are not cheap as you will soon find out. You should have looked into see if you could afford to keep a reptile or any other pet before getting one. Good luck to your pet.

I have a 400$ bike I bought a couple months back that I am putting up on Craigslist for 250 and my dad will pay the rest he said :( my Cham needs this I feel terrible

Good for you! :) It's always nice to see people who genuinely care about the pets they bring into their homes. It's really disheartening all the cases of people getting animals then not wanting to bother with this or that.

I would do anything to keep any of my reptiles healthy I'm just going to take her to the vet get her all back in shape and move her into a new 24x24x30 cage and put her old one outside as a playpen ;) she doesn't deserve what happened to her and I caused it therefor it should be my responsibility to fix it.

I would see your dads position if he didnt have the money for it but hes spending $1,000 on a hoarse and doesnt wanna spend $200 on your chameleon is a bit selfish

More than a bit selfish he treats my reptiles as if they are fish as I pour my time and love into taking care of them it doesnt make sense at all

I wouldnt be too harsh on your father. Many people dont think of reptiles as something that should need vet attention and money constantly poured into. Horses are good return though, unlike a cham... horses can be in races and shows, and if they are taken care of and well trained can sell for a damn good price. Im not saying your dads in the right, he is just looking at it from a very different, shaded perspective.

All you can do is try enlighten him.

I have been trying to tell him that my reptiles are like his horses and they should be treated medically equal I mean he is starting to realize what they mean to me and I think he is in the position right were he will pay the bill but he sees no point in it and will pay it for me to get off his back more than to help my Cham

Saying chameleons are like horses is a bit of a stretch. They may mean just as much to you , and im sure they do. Some people think they should "gain" something from everything, pets included. My boyfriends mom is anti reptile because "he's not a scientist". People just need to realize that just because something isnt a cat, dog, or in your case a horse, doesnt mean they arent great pets.

Horses do provide far more for humans than a cham. Im basically my chameleons slave girl, i feed them, clean them, provide for them. They dont *give* me much, infact my veiled would rather I disapear all together.. lol, sigh.

You just shouldnt let someone's lack of knowledge get you angry or upset, its not really their fault. All you can do is try and show them! And if they still refuse to listen, then at least you tried!

It's hard being a young person. You seem to be making a little head with dad. Do you think he would leand you the cash now so your Cham can be seen sooner rather than later, and you can pay him back when you sell your bike? Good luck.

I could always talk my mom into it but I'd feel more guilt for her financial issues having that she works at a gas station and all i think my dad will take him there he just doesn't want to we will se what happens

Yea that's the point I was trying to get across to him just because something isn't cute to you doesn't mean it should suffer it still has a life

Lots of ppl think its normal and natural to have an aversion to reptiles.
Reptile myths and superstions go back for centuries, like bats, spiders and cats ;)

Daddy-O may just have reptiphobia ;)

Watch out with what you're posting—you may start a flame war between a Fish Forum and ours!!

But seriously… as a reptile loving veterinarian with my own practice, I would often have sympathy for someone young and their first reptile, and do whatever I could to soften the bill. I was once in your shoes too! Hopefully your vet may be sympathetic as well.

After that, study hard, go to veterinary school, and specialize in reptiles. That will really freak your dad out!
