Panthers started mating today, please help

yeah they both have their own domains. 3x3x5. so there is plenty of room. i shall go out and find a container and sand tomo after work. thanks for your help. im only breeding them for the experience. i have no hopes in making money, just to know that i could reproduce this amazing creature. hope you guys keep helping me along the way :)

Just to clarify, they do have separate cages, right? This makes it sound like they are in one large cage. A single 3x3x5 is still not enough room for two panthers, especially when the female is gravid. The presence of the male will constantly stress her out, which will be very bad for both her health and the babies' health.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat or have any questions. I am also currently working on my first breeding project (I have 36 eggs cooking right now), but I have done tons of research and I have a lot of experience with chameleon keeping. At this point, it feels like I can't even remember a time in my life before chameleons. :)

Good luck man

Yes. Both seperate cages. Right now they are both in hers. She seems content with him in there. As they keep mating

Oh, another thing I just noticed: Did you say you are mixing the calcium powder and multivitamins? They actually kind of cancel each other out. Calcium and multivitamin days should be separate, using calcium without D3 most days, and a multivitamin only once or twice a month. Also, calcium with D3 should only be used once or twice a month since they produce pretty much all the D3 they need on their own by absorbing the UVB rays. Is the bulb you're using a mercury vapor bulb? That's the only type of bulb I've heard of that produces both heat and UVB.

Ok, cool. It was a little unclear so I just wanted to make sure. I've seen a lot of posts on here with people insisting that they are keeping multiple chams together in an average-sized cage that are doing "just fine" (which, of course, is never true long term).

Yeah. A big bag 1/3 multi vit 2/3 calcium and d3. Throw in 15 crickets.for dusting. Been using it for a year and a half this way and my male seems perfectly healthy. So should I change all the things up? Wouldn't changing may hurt what my chams are used to?

Nah, changing things up won't hurt them. Certain changes may take some getting used to, like if you switch to the dripper & misting method for water rather than the waterfall, but the chams will adapt.

About the supplements, what you've been doing isn't going to kill them or anything, but they may not be getting everything they need for optimal health. When it comes to my own animals, I always remind myself that just because something is working doesn't necessarily mean something else won't work better. I've definitely changed a lot about the way I care for my animals over time. Current husbandry trends are constantly changing as we learn more and more about these exotic animals. :)

If they both have separate cages, why is their breeding unexpected? They should not have been in the same cage until AFTER you have done sufficient research which it seems you have not done.

How much does the female weigh?

I'm not sure why you said "they cancel eachother out"? From my understanding, mixing the multivit and the calcium causes a chemical reaction that will, eventually, cause them to be ineffective....but I was under the impression that this was a time-based change and not instant (which is why they don't pre-mix them)

@pssh: i was kinda wondering the same thing lol

@morhart: the supplementation suggested by others is what the majority of keepers here use and I would say has become the "accepted norm" in the industry; not saying your method isn't going to work, but the suggested one is "tested" by many more keepers and is at least a little more stable in that sense. Also, if you do get babies do realize you must be far more careful of controlling your supps as they are so tiny they will be much more susceptible to these changes.

You should *ALWAYS* have a laying bin for your female. Females will lay eggs regardless of mating...how is it that you have not had any infertile eggs at 10months old? I've only recently got my first female, but that seems odd to me...

That's why I posted this. To learn. I'll definately change things up for the better. As for female never laying before. I couldn't tell you. I do have a nesting place for her. A bucket 11 inch deep and 11 inch diameter filled with washed play sand. I just bought some of that bug burger gut loading for the crickets. Iwouldnt say I'm new to learning about chams. I have read many books and articles. Just a learning process when it comes to the mating. As stated earlier mating was unexpected because they never get along. I usually play with the male and female puffs up. Jan 3 she didn't do anything so I opened her cage. And my male went crazy with head bobbing and pretty much jumped onto her. I went to grab him and he puffed up and hissed. I moved my hand and before you know it. They are mating. So yeah. Unexpected. I'm glad you all are taking time to help or criticize. It's a learning process. You all have gone through it some time or another. Where I'm from no one has chams or any reptiles, amphibians. Anything. Just dogs. So I have been leaning and taking care of them on my own. It might not be the best way. But they are alive and look happy. I'll change things for the better tho. No doubt.

In regards to mating. I have researchers they go pink or beige signaling they are ready. She never did she was dark brown with black spots. Another reason was unexpected. Once he was "mating" she turned pink and has been that color for last 2 days

I have done some research on the subject, and my understanding is that the problem occurs internally when the chameleon is digesting the supplements. Multivitamins typically contain oxalic acids, which bind to calcium and hinder its absorption. So basically, mixing the two may prevent your chameleon from actually utilizing the calcium you're giving him and can eventually lead to a calcium deficiency. (Same reason you should avoid certain veggies like spinach for gutloading - the high levels of oxalic acids inhibit calcium absorption.)

@JRChameleons: oh I see, that is not what I was referring to....I guess I'll have to look more into that

I was referring to the labelling on the side of the HERPTIVITE multivitamin supplement. It says that

"Dosage: We ask that you mix HERPTIVITE with our calcium supplement Rep-Cal. If we did, then the "beadlets" of beta carotene in HERPTIVITE may possibly be damaged during manufacturing by the calcium."

EDIT: I don't know what exactly they mean by this..

From the sounds of it, it seems that it was fairly intentional. If you wanted them to mate, then you wanted them to mate. And that is okay. I just find it hard to believe that this mating was truly unexpected considering the circumstances. Mainly because you opened the door with him right there based on her reaction to him.

How much does she weigh? It could be important.
