I have a 5 month nosy be x ambanja mix. It sometimes shows red on its throat as well as barring on the body, any signs on how I can determine the sex? And I have it in a 16 x 16 x 30 cage. What size of bulb should I be using as a heat source? Thanks!

I would try like a 45 or 60 watt and test the temp with those bulbs. I would keep the temp around 85 degrees or so or a little higher is ok. If you see your cham gaping while basking then it may be too hot. The males usually have a bulge where their vent is. Sometimes it is hard to tell though. The coloring can be decieving when they are young also. Females are usually, orangish, peachy colored when they get older versus the males which have all the reds, yellows, blues, greens etc. Best is post a pic and make sure to take a clear picture of the vent/tail area and we will see if it is a male or female.

Well its still pretty young and I notice tints of green on the cheeks at times. And thank you for the information on the lighting! But I shall post a picture soon. Also, does the barring indicate if he could possibly be a male as I notcied most adult males usually have barring versus females.

yes, most of the females don't have the distinct bars like the males but sometimes as I said, the coloring can be deceiving whenthey are young. Best is to post a pic and let some of the members give their opinion.

Definitely will asap! :)

By five months it should be very clear by now what you have. While we're waiting on pics from you I'm going to post a couple photos of both genders near that age so you get a feel for the differences.

The male in the photo is 4.5 months old, the female is 7.5 but still works.
