Panther chameleon, Riki, is usually black all day?

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care? Male Panther chameleon is about 5-7 months, and have owned for 3 weeks.

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? 4 - 5 days, he really likes to be held.

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? I have been ending him mostly crickets, occasionally silkies. Will give better variety in about a week. 7 - 8 of them every day or 2 days. Give Flukers orange cubes for gut load.

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? I usually give crickets dusting twice a week (out of 4 - 5 feedings), Multivitamin with d3 every month and rep cal every other time I dust.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? I hand mist with mister 4 times a day. I mist every part of the cage (except for bottom because he usually never goes down there) and he drinks a lot from draper and hand mist.

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? White urinate and Brown feces. Never been tested for parasites

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. He has had a partial tail amputation because of tail rot and it was red with blood dripping.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? 18 in long, 18 in wide, and 36 in tall ReptiBreeze cage.

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? 100 watt repti basking bulb, 5.0 UVB Bulb. For night, red night lamp

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? The temp for basking is about 87-89 degrees F, and about 73 - 75 at the rest of the cage. I use a temp gun for temp measurement. At night, it is about 70 where he usually sleeps.

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? 55-80% I have a huge live ficus plant covering the whole cage. A Zoo Med Humidity Gauge is showing humidity.

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? Mentioned above.

Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? My cage is right next to my bed on the floor. No fans, no air vents, but somewhat of a high traffic area (guinea pig, dogs, and very crazy brother)

Location - Where are you geographically located? Los Angeles suburbs.

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. He is mostly black all day, except when taken out. Most likely, it is because he is now on Baytril because of amputation (ended today) and he is getting used to his new tail. He has stopped becoming lighter when he slept, and goes to the bottom more often. He has always stayed at the top since I got him, and he seems to enjoy it up there. Except, I don't know if my assumptions are correct and need some helpful advice from more experienced people than me (I am only 11), and I would like some constructive criticism to make my little buddy, Riki, more happy. Anything is acceptable. Thanks, Drago.

I would say your doing a great job! He might be a little stressed from the high traffic that's around him. Could you post a picture of him so we can get a better idea of his color. Also I have found that a night light is not needed. Unless it gets very cold. Panthers can benefit from a drop in temps at night.

Flukers Orange cubes are essentially useless. Tehy have very little nutritional value. Repashy bug burger, Dinofuel, and Cricket Crack are great commercial gut loads, and if you are wanting to do it yourself, take a look at this gut loading blog:

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? I usually give crickets dusting twice a week (out of 4 - 5 feedings), Multivitamin with d3 every month and rep cal every other time I dust. I'm having trouble making sense of this. He should be getting Calcium without D3 at every feeding (unless it is one of the D3 days or multivitamin days), calcium with D3 twice a month, and multivitamin twice a month.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? I hand mist with mister 4 times a day. Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? White urinate and Brown feces. Never been tested for parasites You should get a fecal check done, just to make sure he doesn't have any parasites even though he may not be showing symptoms.

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. He has had a partial tail amputation because of tail rot and it was red with blood dripping.

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? 100 watt repti basking bulb, 5.0 UVB Bulb. For night, red night lamp Get rid of the night lamp. The red and blue bulbs are advertised that they don't disturb your reptile sleeping, but chameleons have a third "eye," called a parietal eye that senses light and heat. You would only need nighttime heat if your temperatures at night fall below forty degrees Fahrenheit. If they do, (which I doubt), use a ceramic heat emitter, that gives off no light whatsoever.

Having a substantial drop in temperatures at night is actually beneficial. A drop of about ten degrees stimulates their appetite and activity levels when it gets warmer during the day. Definitely keep that nightlight off.

My cage is right next to my bed on the floor. No fans, no air vents, but somewhat of a high traffic area (guinea pig, dogs, and very crazy brother) Does he spend a lot of the day hiding? If so, he may be stressed out by this. If he moves about without a problem, you are fine though.

Location - Where are you geographically located? Los Angeles suburbs.

Anything is acceptable. Thanks, Drago. I can't say specifically what is causing this yet, but you are probably right about the baytril and getting used to the shorter tail. Definitely fix those things I mentioned, but otherwise, you are doing better than I was with my first cham :)

OK, so I turned off the night light. He is active but is showing not much interest in silkworms. Are there any other good feeders out there for his size (about 7-8 in body)? He is getting a check up for the vet about his amputation this week, so I might get a fecal test done. I will get the herptivite soon (that has D3, right?). Thanks for replying! (He is my second cham, btw)

Superworms are ok I don't use them much. Dubias are great. That is my main feeder. Don't use crickets anymore.

All of those feeders are great in nutrition as long as you gut load properly. Superworms can be used for the odd meal or two without gut loading. Silkworms only eat mulberry, but they are still healthy.
I have three containers of supplements. One of them is calcium without D3, one of them is calcium with D3, and one is a multivitamin. Multivitamins sometimes have D3, but I believe it is a lot less than the D3 powder itself.
