Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - Ambilobe, Male, 10mo. old. In my care for 8-9mo
  • Handling - I bring him out of his cage a couple times a week for no longer than 20 min.
  • Feeding - Crickets mostly (5-8 daily), gut loaded with veggies (greens, orange, zucchini, carrot, sweet potoato) and powdered with all recommended suppliments. Hornworms monthly (25 or so)
  • Supplements - MONTHLY SCHED- Calcium mostly, Reptivite 4 times, D3 2 times, Minerall 4 times
  • Watering - Mister, set to 5 minutes morning and evening with a couple "spritzes" here and there. I also have a warm humidifier on the floor with a 2in pvc pipe that runs from the unit up the side of the cage, angles, then extends across the top, then drilled holes so the steam comes out down the top back of his cage (I checked temps of steam, its no hotter than under basking lamp.) This is on from 8am-12am then dry-out period of this and mister until 3pm, then back on till 8pm (NOTE: Pictures below- I do not use the rain system anymore. I also do not have the purple plant anymore. I have the basking lamp suspended a little off the cage now too. This does not show the plant bulb as I have just added that)
  • Fecal Description - Looks fine, white urinate.
  • History - Don't think I've ever seen him drink water even though he is hydrated. Other than that, healthy cham.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - 2w x 4h x 2d Screen Reptibreeze
  • Lighting - Reptibulb 18"(5 i think?) 150w incandescent bulb for basking, 60w plant blulb (kept further away from cage)
  • Temperature - High 80's-90 under basking bulb. 70's at bottom of cage
  • Humidity - Always at around 50-60 thanks to the humidifier
  • Plants - 4 live plants, not sure the type but I have elephant ears (small), and a couple other plants that require adequate watering (as they are always wet)
  • Placement - Right now, living with the mother-in-law, his cage is in an empty bedroom (empty of people, there's still a bunch of furniture/decor) The AC vent is right above his cage, I keep it half closed.
  • Location - Dallas, Texas

Current Problem - He is sleeping at the bottom of his cage on the substrate. He explores during the day as usual. Substrate is the PVC platform that comes with the cage. I have plants to weigh it down in the center, I drilled holes and water drains through this. I worry he's drinking that water because his poop sits on the substrate (i've started cleaning it every other day). Though, I have not seen him drink down there. I see him before work early in the morning and he's just sitting down there. He's NOT LAYING DOWN. He's "standing" on his feet. Its like he just likes it down there. He otherwise seems healthy. Anyone seen this behavior? Should I be worried?

I've attached a picture of him. I can take more pictures if need be.

Thank you very much for your time!

What is the nighttime temp in your cage? Could be he's looking for a cooler place to spend the night. The cage should cool down at least 10 degrees at night, with no visible light.

I'm sure it gets down to about 65-70F. I'll be sure to double check it tonight. If it needs to be around 50, i'm not sure I can swing that in the Texas summer.

Maybe not, but possibly you could set his basking light to shut off sooner in the afternoon? The temp in the room will dictate how cool it can get. As long as he is able to sleep and acts normally during the day he may be fine during the summers.

I'll have it switch off an hour earlier, then try a couple hours early, see if that changes anything. Thanks for the tip
