Our New Loki Male Sambava

While sitting at the computer watching for updated news of the wildfires (and concerned for our friends) thought I would process a few photos. Here is a photo of our new male Sambava. He is a son of Loki. He is about 8 months old, and IMHO quite gorgeous.

He is beautiful! Did he just have the opportunity to see a female? My male Sambava's face looks exactly like that when he gets to see his chica. He is definatly nice looking! I just saw on kingsnake classifieds that Tyler is selling the last clutch from Loki. I really wish I had some extra room, and was out on my own because I would have picked one up in a heart beat! But seeing as my mom wouldn't even let me bring home pygmies another panther is out of the question. I will be done with college in May and you better believe when I look for a house it better have a well suited chameleon room But like I said he is beautiful and definatly from great lineage!

Thank you so much for the kind words. Yes, we have an older, receptive, female sambava panther that he was gazing at. He is too young to really get fired up in his coloring. But his face, part of his underside, and legs did turn reds and oranges. He was purchased from Tyler by Pamschams some time ago, and when I talked to her about the mature female Sambava we have, she agreed to sell him to us, along with a female sambava that is still very young. When you get settled in you may still find some of Loki's kids available as adults, or subadults. I'm glad we're doing Sambavas, the females are very sweet tempered (unlike the female veileds we have). And the male is energetic but easily handled when necessary.

Royden, we are really enjoying him. It was so nice yesterday, he even went outside for some sunshine. Elliot got so inspired by his crazy subadult/adult coloration that he started shopping for a better digital camera. Do you have any recommendations? We want something with a worthwhile zoom, so we don't have to get right up on these guys to take photos if we don't want to. Thank you for the kind words. Sandy

I have a digital rebel xti with a 60mm macro lens. The lens doesn't allow you to zoom at all so it's probably not what you're looking for. You can get a rebel these days for around $600-$700 I think. But a really decent lens can cost that much or more. My macro was $460 and I love it. A good zoom could be $200+. It's a costly thing to get involved in.

If you're just looking for a simple point and shoot, which may suit you better, I'm afraid I can't help, I'm not sure what's out there these days or what a good buy is. This rebel is the only camera I've ever owned.

Hmm. I think you're right. Elliot probably wouldn't go for those prices. He's shopping the digital point and shoot stuff with high optical zoom and high pixel count. (Which would suit my skill level better anyway, I'm sure) There are others on the forum who have discussed their cameras. I'll do a search and see what they recommending in the lower price ranges. It was surprising how good it came out. But, he was standing still, studying something at the time. I would really like to photograph Wolfgang, one of our male veileds, because he has that exotic coloration (something like Otto's). Sort of a reddish brown striping against turquoise. But Wolfgang either won't sit still or runs and cowers in the back corner of his enclosure when the door opens and the camera comes out. He went out for some sunshine yesterday, too. And achieved very striking coloration in the full sun. But every time I approached he would turn lateral on me and do that super skinny thing, hiding behind a branch. Bummer.

Yes, that is the plan. But we are very new to breeding, so we are cautiously optimistic about the future. Pam will be helping us along, as well as the great advice available on this forum (AND the stack of books I've been reading).

Well, after followup and further clarification...it appears this beautiful young Sambava is actually Loki's grandson. We look forward to seeing his coloration become even more stunning as he ages.
