Organic potting soil has white stuff in it?

I hope I didnt cause u any marriage problem right now,n dont yell at ur wife or she might put u on the sofa tonight ,if I were u ,go to lowes tomorrow buy some new soil n some roses to put it in the perlite soil n appraise ur wife with them so both of u can be happy.

Thats all that I can see being done. I tried, putting screen and then rocks no go.

Im glad u find ur answer, there is always a new cyberlocc day my friend.

I hope so because today sucks lol. I will prolly just give the plants a few days to get rid of any pesticides (was going to do after) and then use a sand /ecoearth mix.

yeah .___. I've had those days where I thought everything was going well and then I hit an annoying snag that ruins all my hard work >.< Have faith that it will be better soon ^^

I agree with Andee, dont let this to bring u down ,things can get more complicated than this,if every day is a happy day, then we are for sure to live in a very boring world!

ya I aint going to let it get to me, he has plants already not the end of the world to wait a few days to add more lol.

Perlite floating to the top of your plant = a bad day? (first world problems at their best) lol..

Don't flood the plant when you water it. Water a little, let it drain. I never need to water my plants once they are in the enclosure. They get plenty with the misting and the dripper... (y)

Ya I dont think I will need to water mine either. My mister runs 2 nozzles for the cage 4 times a day at 5 mins per time.

Hopefully the drainage can handle it. I got pmed some ideas and found some others here on the forums, for bnoth good drainage and perlite issues.

As to the first world problems IKR, Trust me this didnt use to classify as a bad day for me lol but now I am susceptible to this.

Place a covering of weed block fabric over the top, then cover with rocks or even better plant a ground cover over it, so that of the chameleon accidentally falls, it has a nice soft landing. Selaginella and baby's tears will work well for this or even pansies from a garden center and all are safe. You could even sprinkle wheat, chia, or grass seeds over the soil and in a week, you'll have a carpet of green. Don't overthink it. For the future, a great potting soil is Burpee Eco Seed starter, which is a coir blend. It still needs an aerator for ideal drainage, as do ALL soils bought at box stores, but it's much better than most.

What are your thoughts on a sand eco earth mix? I was thinking of doing that later. To combat water and macth the female cages. As I plan to have permanent laying bins for them.

Sand is pretty dense and and aerater should be something like coarse perlite, charcoal, reptibark, or items of similar size and appropriate weight, to stay integrated in the soil and not wind up at the top or bottom. If you use the sand, place an inch of larger media, even pea gravel in the bottom. I'm a competitive plant exhibitor and judge, so I'm giving advice on what's best for the plants and I'm positive most chameleon keepers aren't doing things the way I'm advising you to. You have to consider your goals. If you'd rather replace plants as they decline, then keep it simple, but if you'd like longterm, ideal growth, beyond just surviving, I'm a good resource.

Make sure the sand is coarse. Fine sand will clog the airspaces around the roots and suffocate them.

Wont coarse sand hurt the cham? I was under the impression the ecoearth was to add aeration.

I got the idea here https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/entry/custom-plant-soils.131/

And laying bin threads.

The females cage will be a dragon strand breeder cage with the laying bin permanent under it. The laying bin will also have plants in it planted in the soil.

What is a good coarse sand, and what if the cham eats the course sand? I cant cover it with rocks so.

Coarse sand should pass through them. Perilite and most soil aggregates are only a concern because they can cause blockages, not because they are toxic. Eco Earth is coir and it holds LOTS of water. It does help prevent soil from compacting, but isn't good enough for adding needed air spaces. Use the Burpee stuff I recomended, mix in some chunky hardwood mulch or small bark nuggets, and cap it with a small circle of weed block, topped with straight Burpee. That will solve all of you problems and be relatively inexpensive and simple. Adding some Osmocote fertilizer wouldn't be a bad thing, either.

I feel like we are talking about two different things now. Because you said cap it, I am talking about a laying bin, I cant cap the laying bin, she needs to be able to dig and lay lol.

So the Burpee stuff has perlite in it? That wont work the cham will eat it right? I really dont want soil for the laying bin. 2 reasons, A Panthers lay there eggs in sand in the wild not soil. B, soil makes them dirty lol.

That is that is what I have read from here and a few other places. Members that have been to Madagascar said its not soil there its sand, the rain forest is red mud there is no soil there. (I have never been there so IDK, just parroting what Jann and a few others have said)

However the laying bin will be the entire cage bottom and permanent and will have a tree growing in it.

On that note, will coarse sand hold a tunnel? The stuff you guys are saying is 100% against everything else I have read on this forum.

I get the plant idea. I get that, however she suggested coarse sand to the laying bin. And now you are saying to do the burper for the laying bin?
