Hi, I had recently purchased a exo terra for my chameleon and it was fine. I found it clawing at the glass a couple of times but i feel like if i put some type of paper or something on the outside or just decorate it with tons of plants so it wont be able to see the reflection.

Just so you know I did take the chameleon out of that cage while im thinking of some way to prevent the cham from getting stressed.

Please let me know what successes and failures youve had with your exo terra and chams.

Just because it was clawing at the glass does not necessarily mean it was doing it at its own reflection. Was it firing up or sticking out its gular? I would say if the answer is yes, then he was probably seeing his own reflection. He is probably clawing cause he wants out. Chameleons don't like to be caged, not even in big cages. They never seem to have enough room! What size is your cage?

IMHO veileds and panthers should not be kept in glass unless you live in a very cold climate and I still would not do it. Glass is fine for some species for experienced keepers that have experience in controlling the temps and humidity.

The big question is how big is the exoterra? The ones sold at pet stores and much too small for an adult.

You're an Aggie! I just graduated left College Station a few months ago!

I use the exoterra 18x18x32 for almost all the little ones that come into my house. The tink crickets don't escape often and keeping humidity up is very easy.

I use exoterra for young panthers. My female used to scratch the glass, I think she did get the idea of unclimbable surface ;)

It's a 18-18-24 I believe heres a picture

I'm hopefully buying a panther tomorrow and I don't want it to die. Would you say they are fine in a glass one or just wait till I can afford a screen cage.

If it's possible I'd like to keep it in the exo b.c I like the look and it seems really nice.

What's the best way for me to ensure that my lil panther will be safe and happy?

Thanks y'all

Gig em!

There's nothing wrong with exo terra, you have nothing to be afraid. But 24 will be only for a young cham, you would have to change it later for sth bigger.
Exo terra's create a chimney effect, so there is enough air flow. Thery are also better with keeping high humidity.

I love the exoterra's for baby chameleons.

They provide good airflow thanks to the ventalation at and below the front doors, with rising heat naturally pulling in through the lower vents and out up the top.

you have to be careful with watering techniques if you dont drill a drainage hole / tap.

Occassionally an animal might paw at the glass for a short period of time, but they figure it out quickly and cease to do so. They do not see their own reflection unless there is a mirror effect created by placement of dark paper outside or wrong lighting.

Excellent for retaining humidity longer - important if you dont live somewhere humidy.

similarily, less heating (lower wat bulbs) is required - great if you dont live in the hot south!

solid walled enclosures never cause a chameleon to loose toenails in the way screen enclosures can.

Insufficient size for most larger chams though.

I had my exo terra 18x18x24 within only a week and swapped it out for a screen cage instead, those glass terrariums are so hard to clean/maintain. Especially the pool of water at the bottom.
