cane and bamboo are essentially the same thing.

Not arguing—just citing one explanation of the difference.
I've been through the archives and goggle several times re: bamboo and lucky bamboo.
You can find lots of opinions either way. What's even more bizarre (IMO) is that usually, the folks who say one is bad say the other is OK—and vice-versa.
From the 4 known safe lists I usually cite:
https://chameleonacademy.com/plants/ doesn't mention any kind of bamboo either way.
https://caskabove.com/chameleon-safe-plants says 'dumb cane' is toxic.
https://www.madcham.de/en/pflanzen-fuers-terrarium/ says 'striped bamboo fern' (not a true bamboo) is unknown.
https://www.chameleons.info/l/safe-and-unsafe-plants/ mentions bamboo as 'Not recommended', but not for toxicity reasons as far as I can tell.
As far as the foliage, I guess one takes their chances. My cham is a panther, so plant munching isn't an issue.
As far as the wood, many don't recommend bamboo for gripping/slipping reasons. I'm not seeing that, and if anything, the bamboo is strengthening my panther's grip—that little sucker can GRAB—even with his tail!
He occasionally 'slips' (and sometimes falls) for a variety of reasons, but he's
never slipped off of the bamboo stakes I have in his enclosure—wet or dry.
