My family says Im pretty good, but what do complete strangers think? Im a hobby photographer. I do not have the equipment yet for a professional leap. In fact, everything I have taken has been on an olympus sp320 point and shoot. Here is my website: TNT Photography PLease be honest..but not so much that I cry.:)

I dont follow?

Ah, i missed the "chameleon" part..I thought it just said GEneral. My bad, Can I remove it?

It's fine, just a thread of this genre would have been better suited in the lounge.

Overall i am a very hard critic. don't take this too personal.

You are off to a great start, but still have a ways to go, i am no amazing photographer either. i am sure you will greatly improve the quality of your work with time and effort.

I think ur awesome! Verry talented!! There is a section here for photography, u should check it out, I think u would enjoy it!!

Thanks

Sorry I just saw GENERAL and didnt pay attention to when you click on it, it changed to Chameleon. ON a bird forum i was on, they had a section for other stuff like photography that didnt necessarily deal with birds so I just assumed this was the same idea. All apologies. If it can be removed, I have no problems with that. I feel silly now. (Sorry I saw people asking about camera equip so I got confused apparently)

Hmm.

Well, Im technologically impaired so any help would be Great! All I know is to disable right click so clients cant go in and steal more pics than what they paid for! :) Im lucky I can even figure out how to post on here..and apparently I did that wrong! LOL!

Ok

I added a pic of my veiled BEN on the 4th page..does it qualify as Chameleon photography now? :)

It's a pretty darn cut-throat industry right now for photography, and I have to say being technologically impaired and still using a point-n-shoot are two big strikes against you. But probably the biggest part of being a photographer is how you interact w your clients and subjects, the pets, and keeping both of them relaxed throughout the entire process, especially sales. If you're really good w pets and people there's a ton of info online on how to technically become a better photographer. It also comes with time, shoot your first 100,000 photos and just try to look back on your early stuff and not cringe. Personally, when looking at most of my work over a year old I can't believe how naive I was. Hence why I sometimes want to just scrap my website and start over.

Yikes

Hmm..Well, maybe its just that Im in a small town then because the people that advertise around here aren't good at all. I am sure there are awesome people in Nashville. I know I got a lot against me right now.. Im waiting to get a revel XSi within the next month or do. I have lenses for it and everything and Ive been taking a course. Im not really a people person...My goal is to one day take professional pics in the wild for magazines or newspapers.. Long shot maybe, but I just started this about 4 months ago, like I said, with a crappy point and click that wont even register batteries anymore! So keep that in mind when viewing..I dont have macro lenses and an awesome DSLR.. Its just me and a button.. Thanks for all the advice and the kind words.:)

Just a question....have you ever taken a photography class? Most Jr. colleges have classes that will help with your set-ups. Pictures that don't look posed are the best kind. I think that photography is a skill that can be learned with success. I have 2 photographers in my family and my best friend is a professional who has done travel series, photographic art, virtual home videos, etc. She has lots of education and continually tries to find classes and seminars to attend in her craft. Good luck to you and keep shooting!

PS. Always take LOTS of pics of the same setting. You can always delete the ones you don't want and narrow your choices down to only the best.

Here are some pointers from me:

1. POST PROCESSING: A little less on the post processing. Additionally, when needed keep your post processing to a minimum. I am not a fan of the artificial lens blur, gaussian blur effects (not to extremes anyhow). The selective coloring images are fun to play around with, but not as a hand off to a potential clients - they tend to look really unprofessional. Rarely does it work effectively when done by pro's.

2. CROPPING: You should practice getting "the shot" by manually cropping your image by moving and positioning yourself rather than doing it in some paint program. Some of your crops don't work too well. Look at animal photography books and see what elements are included and what can be excluded. Finding your photographic eye is probably the most challenging task. (I haven't found mine yet either).

3. POINT OF VIEW: Try getting as close to eye level or below eye level for your subjects (hero shots work well for pets). Your working with pets, that means you need to really get down low or prop them up somehow for a better point of view. Your best set are the ones of the great danes. Surprise surprise, they are large and tall. A much better perspective makes a great deal of a difference.

4. EQUIPMENT: Get a decent camera. Amazing things can be shot with just an entry level DSLR these days. The rebel works well, and the kit lens is decent. Next, save up for a better portrait lens, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 goes for $80 and the better step-up Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 goes for about $350. With minimal to no lighting setups, the fast lens will help you out a lot with available light. Some people say it's not the equipment that makes a photographer. That is partly true. But a great photographer is limited by the equipment he uses. Your equipment will help you achieve better results without relying on post processing and creating artificial bokeh effects that your are going for.

4. TELL A STORY: Perhaps think about showing your subjects in their environment. Are they hunting dogs? do they live on a farm with a bunch of animals? Perhaps they have a litter or puppies. Are they seeing eye dogs? or hospital dogs? Try to portray their life through what you capture. Sometimes it' natural to say "let's go outside on the grass - it's nice out" without thinking that this particular dog is an indoor dog that has a crazy obsession with grandpa's lounger. Capturing this lil mutt on the lounger will create a lasting memory for the owner. Ask the owner about their habits, what they love or hate, favorite toys, furniture, pesky leather shoe - etc. and work from there.

4. LEARN MORE: join www.photo.net and ask your questions there. It's a better forum for your needs as it relates to photography.

GOODLUCK!
Nate

Thanks

Nate, thank you for all that. Like I said, Im just starting out and am not a professional. The website sometimes scrunches the pics or some people say it cuts them off so maybe thats where the cropping looks off? We have a HUGE monitor so everything is large and perfect on my screen (positioning, not content). I have never taken any courses. I just really enjoy my dogs and have found something i truly enjoy. one day I hope to pursue it but I justw ant to enjoy it for now and any help is appreciated. Like I said, I have a 4 year old POS camera that wont even register batteries sometimes. I walk around with pocket fulls. I literally get 1-2 shots off a new 2 pack..so its hard for me to get what I want/need whent he camera doesnt cooperate. Thanks for all the tips and again, the nice words.. Its just something for fun and I rather like showing off my dogs. LOL.:)
