Hello, I have a five month old Nosy Be Panther. I am writing this because I am concerned he is not eating enough. Generally I put 10 two week crickets or 7-8 medium phoenix worms around 11am-12pm and I come back around 6:30-7 from work and there are 3-4 left, sometimes more. He eats crickets, dubia roaches and pheonix worms in the same quantities. He is also not very big. At this age he should be growing and eating quite a bit more. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or I am being overly concerned and should give him more time.
Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
- 5 month old Male Nosy Be Panther I have had him for 3 months.
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
- Once a week
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
- I feed him anywhere from 11am-1pm. He gets 10 two week crickets or 6-8 medium phoenix worms or 8 small dubia roaches. I alternate gutload with bug burger, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, sweet potato, yams, papaya, mustard greens, collard greens,
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
-4 days a week zoomed Repti Calcium without d3, 3 days a week repashy calcium plus, dinofuel raptor edition every two weeks.
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
-I use the monsoon misting system, It mists for 1 minute every two hours starting at 8:30am and his last misting is at 6:30, an hour and half before bed so the cage has time to dry out. I see him drinking daily.
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
- normal. firm brown with white urate
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
-Small reptibreeze 16x16x20. I will upgrade to a 2x2x4 soon.
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
- 8am-8pm. I have him in my bedroom so if I'm in there with the lights off after 8 I put a dark sheet over his cage. Ive peeked in and he seems to be sleeping fine. I forget the brands of the lights but I bought them at the petstore, my guess is zoomed. My heatbulb is 50w and my uvb is a 5w tube.
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
- His basking spot is generally 87 and the lower sections are mid to low 70s. At night the temps are in the low 60s.
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
- It spikes in the high 80s and never really gets below mid to low 50s. I measured with a digital hygrometer the first couple of days but I haven't checked in a couple of months. Its the rainy season here so I'm not super concerned.
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
- I have a ficus, a money tree, and a Pothos.
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
- The top of the cage is around 5 feet off the ground, It sits on a desk. There are no vents nearby. The cage is in my bedroom as I have roommates and do spend a bit of time in there. I try not to bug him but its really hard not to say hi like 5 times a day.
Location - Where are you geographically located?
Portland, OR
Current Problem - I don't think he's eating enough, although I could be overly concerned. I would just like to know if there is any glaring problems with my husbandry. I can take a picture to show you my set up. Maybe he's just a late bloomer.
