Nosy Be? Ambanja?

It took me a while to get him fired up.
The mirror thing does not work. So, this is the first time he fired up in front of camera (He's a very mellow, happy go lucky kinda guy).

Hopefully, this pic will remove all doubts.

Thanks guys.

Dedolah,

You might have a problem here. From the more recent pictures, the animal does not appear to have a hemipenal bulge. While its cranial form is that of a male, its coloration shows patterns that may be part female. The existance of "she-beasts" or "she-males" has been discussed in a few other threads, and in my estimate they occur only a few percent of the time, but the possiblility has to be considered, based on evidence so far, that it is neither fully male nor female. The hemipenal bulge should be very obvious by now, and while the recent pictures do not fully show that, my suggestion would be to check for it. Maybe post some profile pictures of that area. Thanks.

Now that looks like an Amandil baby . I see the white. he is going to look like this in a few weeks watch. That is exactly what Gonzo used to look like.

:eek::eek::eek:
you mean my pixel is actually a pixelette?

i see hemipenal bulge, it's just not that big at all.
great! now the question will be boy or girl.
i'll try to get a better pic and post it here.

Boy? Girl? In Between?

Ok. Jim raise an intriguing possibility about his sex.
So, here ya go guys.
Please let me know your thoughts.

I always under the assumption that Pixel is a he.

He is supposedly 5 months old. He was shipped in July 23 and as far as i know the breeder never ship animal younger than 2.5 mo.
I tried my best in contacting them (4 emails and 2 phone calls); But, they never replied back.

The jury is still out, as he/she still has more development to do, but a hemipenal bulge should be very pronounced right now, and there just isn't a package there ! Going to have to disagree with Cainschams, as while there may be a trace of a hump, its hardly a bread crust when it should be the whole ham sandwich. The current main body coloration is still very weak for a male. It is more than large enough to have obvious male banding on the sides, with more pronounced coloration, and a bulge evident from several feet away. There is no point in needing to be definitively certain at this point, as time will surely tell, but right now, it is fitting all the expectations of a she-beast. Such animals often end up in "what is it" threads, as their true identity is confusing. I traded notes with another very experienced keeper on this critter earlier, who may eventually post, but they were leaning as I am on your animal. Keep us updated as to whether it ends up liking to shop, or watch football. ;) Thanks.

Frans, I can tell you this much. If it turns out to be a girl and you don't want her. I will buy you a replacement male for her and take her off your hands. ;)

But no I will not trade Dr. Gonzo.. :D just in case you were thinking that.

Off course, I prefer a boy. But, if it turned out to be a healthy girl.
I would be ecstatic as well.
but a she-male, on the other hand, will be problematic.
I doubt they will exhibit any interest in mating.

That is correct. They will show no desire towards breeding, and will not produce eggs. If its anything, its a male, as the head is definitely that of a male. Usually, in a she-beast, the head morphology leans towards the male, especially with the rostral appendage. The body is also larger than a normal female, but its final size will be typical of a large female, or very small male. The barring pattern and coloration will always be confusing. It may still turn out to be a slow developing male, but from the photos, I think you are 50-50 at best on that possibility. Our experience is that it is random, having never seen more than one per clutch, and occurs in the wild too (we have imported a few). The other entity I had been communicating with had experienced such in other montane chameleon species. Surprisingly, I have never seen it in veileds. It may occur there, but I just haven't seen it.

I am hopeful that I am wrong. I do thank you for all the photos too, for either way, its a good information thread to something many are not familiar with. I do not fault the breeder, as these animals take time to eventaully be "none of the above". Thanks again.

Very informative, Thanks for all the insight Jim! It is always great to learn something new. Especially when it is so well explained.

Frans , I have my fingers crossed for a boy.

I thought this might be encouraging.

Here is an example of his brothers progress. He has one of the biggest bulges I have seen.

Here are a couple of pics first one taken on 7/24 and the second on 9/2 of 08 . I thought he was a female at first and questioned it until that happened. Right around when he started to show some real color it grew like crazy. He was a bit of a late bloomer.

He boobs like crazy at lucy , but she isn't having it yet.
