No where to turn to

Hello CF,
My name is Supa Duck and today I have been notified by the powers that be, my landlord (aka maternal unit) showed me outside of our house that there is a cricket nest. she waited for me to see it when i came back from work, and its true. the crickets are on the underside of the roof, and in the cracks between the chimmeney from outside, to the house, there is a small crack there that leads up the house. Possibly up to our attic if the crack is big enough. I am incredibly sad because I already dont have a good relationship with my parents as it is, and now i have been on noticed, that due to my negligence on cricket care, some of them have escaped and now we have a bunch of them.

Could it be true, that crickets can breed that fast? they were big size, looked full growned adult crickets, i spotted about 15 or so from the same place i mentioned earlier. I mean, there were some gaps in the chameleon cage, but i got this one clamp from some hardware store and that should have stopped the problem, but i guess they still escaped and made cricket babies. i did saw some cricket babies inside the cricket cage but i thought it would be neat so once they grow i can feed to my chameleon "Charmander" but i guess they escaped the cricket cage too perhaps? I mean, i could play the theory game and all but the point is they made a nest right at my house and now I have been told today that I have to get rid of the crickets, and relatively, my chameleon as well.

I am incredibly sadden, I am on the verge of tears, i could never have a pet like a regular dog or cat because of my dad, (he hates noisy animals) so i thought a chameleon would be the best thing, also i love them, i know that now, and now i have to get rid of my only true pet after only having him for less than a year. i love charmander so much, he is like a cool bro, i talk to him and i let him climb me when he climbs me from my hand to top of head.

now this news also comes at a time, that for some time, charmander, (a phanther chameleon) he has been having some sneezing from time to time, which i thought it was normal that i read that they do that to clear their noses, or like a warning signal, but he also has a sunken right eye since friday (august 31) and i read that could be a warning for little sprayed water, so ive been spraying much more frequent since then, and now his condition has worsen, not only has his right eye sunken but he seems to have this noise when he breathes, which could mean he might be infected inside (?) im not a vet and i dont expect a vet answer i just think he is getting sicker. from what i read it might be a disease due to feeding him crickets that are dead which i did from time to time, and my negligence to not clean the cricket cage. i think a disease developed in the cricket cage and passed it to charmander.

im not entirely sure what i want to accomplish with this thread, i just dont know what to do. i love charmander, i dont want to get rid of him. he is the friendliest charmander bro ive ever met, he never hissed at me, he always was a bro and he would grab my finger and just stay like that for what seemed forever. sometimes he would climb on top of me, he does funny things like when he shreads he would pick at his own face to tear off the dead skin, and one time i pulled out his poop cause he had like a white solid thing coming out of his bum, when i pulled it he looked surprised. lol but it was just poop. i fucking love him, he is so pretty too.

Hi! I'm so sorry your having troubles.

Crickets do not make nests in the cracks of houses. Crickets lay eggs in the dirt on the ground, so whatever that nest is, it is not caused by your crickets.

Here's a link on breeding crickets, perhaps it will help you convince your parents that whatever that is, it's not crickets: http://www.breeding-crickets.com/cricket-breeding

You should start a thread in the Help Forum about your chameleon's problems.

thank you for the reply Elizadolots, and thank your moving the thread to a place that you believe is the right place to have this discussion.

i dont think i have stated how big the crickets were. These were full grown adults hanging on the wall by the outside of my outside. it would not make sense for these big crickets to breed so fast because the ones i get are always in a cricket cage, and these also look different from the ones i normally get in terms of size. my theory is that the regular crickets i get escaped from the house and bred outside my house, cause i also have a crop of food growing in my backyard, so they could have layed their eggs there then. also, im not doubting that they bred on soil, but they do lay eggs elsewhere as well because i even spotted tiny crickets in the cricket cage and that is plastic. another thing i noticed, that after i got crickets, i have heard a lot of cricket noices outside my house during the night. I would like to think is because of the heat that is making breeding for these guys easier, but that is another layer that is outside of my force of control.

ok thank you, i will make a detailed thread of my chameleons condition if i find some time. i think im going to take him to a reptile vet regardless, i dont want him to be in pain if he is. is hard to tell with chameleons since they hide their condition for they are chameleons after all, all about apperances with these guys...eheh...

I didn't move the thread, that would be a moderator.

I think a reptile vet is the best idea for your chameleon.

Crickets don't make nests, they don't breed in wood. If you have a nest, it's not crickets.

Yes I am the one that moved your thread. I had started a reply and got pulled off to do something else.

Where do you live? maybe there is someone here on the forum that is close to where you live and can help out. Also there are a number of other feeders besides crickets. maybe that would help win Mom over. We can help you come up with ways to get mom to let you keep your cham and judt get him different food.

I think you need to get your chameleon to a vet. Sounds like he has a respiratory infection. If you leave him untreated he is gong to get worse. Chamelelons do not make noise when they breathe so there is something wrong.
