okay i dont have a uvb right now but could i take my (veiled) cham out in the sun to get some uvb? but could i do i in the shade cause i live in texas and its hot hes pretty small i forgot to ask the breeder how old he is but hes like as big as my thumb i guess if i can take him out should i hold him or should i take his cage?

you can absolutely take him outside. That is much better for him than the artificial bulbs. I live in florida and it is super hot also. You can bring the cage outside. Just make sure you have shade for him and I would mist him down to cool off. Monitor him and if you continually see him with mouth open then get him inside. They will open their mouths to thermoregulate but if you see it for too long then he probably is not getting cooled down. What I am saying is just don't leave the cage outside and go anywhere. I have my cham outside right now and it is very hot but I just misted him down and I check on him like every 10 minutes to make sure he is ok. you can also take out on a plant but you have to sit there with them then.

I live in dallas, texas and I wont take my cham out because he opens his mouth and lays down. But yes, you will need a uvb. They dont cost too much. If you live in the dallas area you can go to plano pets, they have the reptisun 5.0 for about 20 dollars.

i live in kyle tx so if i take him out i will still need a uvb? i would need to order one becease my petco doesnt have the repti sun 5.0

idk if this is true or not but i would think he would need a chance at sunlight all day? i mean in the wild chams are exposed to the suns rays all day right? and if your not takeing him out all day i would think the uvb would be in order. where i live temps go all over so i keep my cham inside all day but i leave the uvb on and the one corner of his cage is in the sun for about 3-5hrs a day. i noticed he likes the sun light more than the uvb bulb. im in no ways an expert so make sure you find out more.

It's 103 degrees in College Station right now and it'll be up to 108 in no time with similar temps across the state. I took my adult panther outside the other day and in literally ten minutes he was in full heat stress colors and panting. He had shade too. You should order a bulb and take him out to get good UVB in the morning before it gets so hot in the meantime. I wouldn't take him outside after 10am honestly because of how quickly it's getting so hot. Just 2-3 minutes before he overheats isn't enough UVB. I think they need a good 15 minutes solid before the synthesis of vit D3 starts occuring.

You are going to need bulbs anyways so you should really get them. Yes the sun is great source for UVB, but be sure to keep a close watch on them and mist often if very hot and make sure they are tolerating the heat nicely. I havent used a UVB bulbs much this summer for chameleons. Texas heat is dry I suppose though we have lots of humidity as FL.. I sweat stepping outside just breathing.

Let me clarify myself...I did not mean to not get a UVB. I just was figuring you did not have one at the moment and what you could do in the mean time.
Apparently texas is much hotter than florida. It says is is 94 degrees on my patio right now. You just have to use common sense and monitor your chameleon at all times when you are letting him go outside. I probably would not attempt to have my chameleon outside if the temps were as high as Ferrit stated.

yes you need uva. That is uv that is produced in longer wavelengths like a housebulb. So get one of those metal domes that you can screw a light into and get like a 40 watt housebulb and try that for your basking light. Chameleons need both uva and uvb.

Yeah it's downright miserable here. :( We might get a cool front that will drop us down to 94 this weekend! We're all very excited!

south FL is pretty miserable to even be outside with extreme humidity. Ill take Vegas or Texas heat anyday. Thats what A/cs and pools are good for. Working in the heat is lethal though .

Texas heat is only dry in the desert. Today is one of the less humid days and we're still at 30%. 50% is not uncommon on this side of the state. Pools are good, a/c bills are through the roof!
