hi,

out of curiosity, in any case where crickets and silk worms are not available (this includes horn worms and roaches too!), what is the next best insect there is for a chameleon.

From where i am from, superworms and mealworms are always available, but there are times where crickets are not available thourghout. yes..im not jk..where i am from its not easy to get a hold of feeders, and i believe i am the only to have a pair of cham in my town (Miri of sarawak of malaysia).

what is the next best option there is?

Order online.

if its possible, i wont be scracthing my head over this matter.

Malaysia bans or quarantines all import and exports of animals including insect. A shipment i made (not organic) from taiwan took more than a month to be delivered to my place, box being ripped apart after inspection from customs.

There is a tight control in imports and exports of animals here. My cham was bought kinda like illegaly, thats why us so pricey here. The veil i had, cost me around US$230. Senegal cost me around $180.

Ah I see... I didn't really understood the part you meant when you said Malaysia earlier.

What wild bugs do you have? Pictures?

I suggest that you breed your feeders, it could be profitable for you possibly since its hard to get them around there also. Get some dubia roaches or crickets, etc... whatever the basic staple feeders are that become available periodicity over there.

Wkyd,

that is my plan .. have to tried to breed the dumb crickets without success .. will try again. But unfortunately, we do not have the dubia thingy here ... seems easier to breed it though .. but apart form that , i was sondering what was the next best option.

Swayne,

i usually get some house flies and spiders .. she loves jumping spiders (non poisnous). but i cant probably breed spiders ... and the flies . i had bought 2 types of fly contraption to catch the flies .. which does not work at all .. its aways the one or two buzzing insde the house which we caught .. and its difficult not to smack its guts out ....

Malaysia is tropical, am I correct? I'm sure you could have some grasshoppers or some other bugs...

Houseflies are good feeders--after they have been bred. Flies carry lots of bacteria.

The named worms are an option but if u have instances where the feeders are unavailable you could consider breeding some of your own so you dont have to worry about not having food to offer. One year we had a cold snap on a rather mild winter and the cricket were arriving to the stores either dead or not at all.. needless to say we had a feeder shortage. I had just started breeding roaches and they were too big for my reptiles at the time and anyway not enough. I spent enough gas and time on the phone searching for crickets.. even walmart was out. I increase my roach colonies by ordering online shortly after and have kept them up since.. I just buy more and replenish when I need to but am sure not to let them get too low. I make sure come winter I am well stocked and no longer concern myself w the stress and worry of bug hunting.

er .. soem small grasshoppers, jumping sipders, bettles, flies, tiny bees (without stingers),

it is a tropical country, but way i live is kinda urban and u dont get as that many insects daily to feed her. I have tried to breed the cricket as per the thread in here .. but doesnt seem to work. i will try it again .

any more tips on how to brrreed feeders? like im really new at this and need a feeders breeders book for idiots?

OH >> APPRECIATE THE REESPONSE FROM YA ALL ... THIS FORUM HAS BEEEN REEEEAAAAALLLLY HELPFUL. ALTHOUGH I SEE A LOT OF DEBATE, SOMETIMES TO THE POINT OF ARGUMENTS BUT ALL N ALL, WE ALL WANT THE BEST FOR OUR CHAMELEONS. KUDOS !

i dont have it now though .. and its not actually easy to get em. mostly i give them flies ( i know its not hyginic and has a lot of bacteria) and jumping spiders. and that too doesnt come in abundance. sometimes we have crickets, but its all in adult size and its hard to pick small ones.. and for example, recently there are no crix watso ever .

updates....

luckily, yesterday some small crickets were available in one of the pet stores. Got some for the chams... bought some adults and will attempt to breed them, rathar then to buy em .. just in case they are out of stock again ... got some info form the forum .. seems pretty easy . but the last time around and failed to hatch any .. i think it was because the soil was to dry and i left it in the crix penn itself .. will try again .. my area has an average tempreture of about 30C. will this be sufficient? or do i need a heating pad thingy?

30C should be good. Best of luck with the crickets!

If you can find any roaches you can breed them. Collect the wild kind and breed them so they are safe to feed. Superworms and mealworms can work too. There are some owners who have chameleons that wont eat anything but superworms and they did well on them alone. It's not ideal, but it can work.

I agree with pssh. Variety is key in maintaining a healthy cham, so collect as many (safe) insects as you can. I understand it's hard, but if you really could just collect a few roaches or grasshoppers and take pics that would really help us out.

hi Psssh,

of all the thread, seems like all of them say super worms are a bad choice of staples .. like giving kids chocolates .. etc etc ... i will try my best to get proper food, but thanks for ur advise.

Swaynnee...
will update on the crickets if it works .hahha .. thanks. Oh by the way .. the senegals LOVED the crickets.

I'm glad to hear they liked them! :D

Supers can make a great feeder--the reason you shouldn't give too much is because worms (usually superworms, waxworms, and mealworms) are addicting, and may only eat those; fortunately for me, my guy will eat just about anything he sees. So he can eat supers completely for one day and eat all crickets the next feeding. It really depends on the personality (and stubbornness ) of your chams.
