No food available

They aren't the best for feeding all the time, but if it comes down to it, you can use them more often than recommended. As long as they are gutloaded well, they can make a very good feeder for using regularly.

thanks for the asssurance... after reading some threads up here .. i feel so guilty to feed them supers and meals last week as i cant find a source of crix. I had like read the thread at seems like killing my cham ...

I know it aint a great feeder, but as i quote, i have no choice. but again, i will try to breed the crix.

thanks guys.

There are cicada in Malaysia

termites are good, and those are certainly in Malaysia

stick insects are a good feeder option, so younger Malaysian Jungle Nymphs would likely be okay

most of not all of the insects that people can eat your chameleon can eat. So I believe for example that bamboo worms and Sago grubs (of the palm weevil) are likely good.

If you can catch the cicadas! :p Very good options Sandra, I would have never thought of that!

By the way... I have always been able to figure out you avatar, but what is it this time? :D

I dont even know if that cartoon exists anymore. Im not as young as some on this forum, so my references are dated :)

hi,

out of curiosity, in any case where crickets and silk worms are not available (this includes horn worms and roaches too!), what is the next best insect there is for a chameleon.

From where i am from, superworms and mealworms are always available, but there are times where crickets are not available thourghout. yes..im not jk..where i am from its not easy to get a hold of feeders, and i believe i am the only to have a pair of cham in my town (Miri of sarawak of malaysia).

what is the next best option there is?

It is true that super worms may not be the best feeder. But I had a cham that only ate well gutloaded superworms for all 8 years of his life. I am pretty sure the superworms were not what killed him as most panthers do not live to be 8 years old. So as long as you do what you can, and your chams stay healthy, I think you are doing a great job.

Also just so you know, I live in the United States, where we have all kinds of feeders, and I am a fairly good cham keeper. But Arnold would only eat supers and I got tired of fighting with him. I am not telling you this is the best thing to do, but don't feel guilty, for doing the best you can.

Oh, I see him perfectly now! :D

Of course they still run it! What would they do without the oldies?

My favorite as a kid was Tom and Jerry.

Well you are a very, very, very long way from the oldest.:):):):)

hmm... cicada is ago idea .. but i get big ones around .. cant seem to find the small ones tohugh .. my area is more urbanized .. so its not easy to find insects, but id do the best i can .. thanks for the tip ..

and yeah . i come form the era of looney and tom n jerry too.

my chams not a picky eater, the problem is my location .. and myself... cant get hold of feeders.

like wise, i try to catch as much insects as possible, but she does have a knack for spiders and flies. I know it could be colonized by bacteria, but .. she likes them thogh .. i catch flies roaming around the house .. hopefully its not infested with poo adn stuff ...

You could use some of those house flies to breed/culture more - and then reduce concerns about what wild house flies may have been in contact with.

Can you not leave your urban area to visit a more natural place where insects thrive?

Stick bugs! That was a great suggestion. You can breed them as a great feeder. There are a lot of resources online for all sorts of stick insects and how to breed them. And praying mantids too. They would be more difficult to breed since they need other bugs to eat, but if you find any they are a great feeder.

i can get out of town and get to more natural places, but still does not gurantee a lot of insects though, but i think thats a good idea of culturing my own flies .. i did try to catch them .. but seems that my chameleon is much better at it than myselve.. i have actually bought 2 electrical contraptions to catch files .. but was a waste of money as it doesnt work ...shheshhh ...

anyway .. i wwent thorugh a lot of website and finaly hit a jackpot. There is a guy form my coutry that has dubias for sale!..im so damm grateful. I had contacted him, and the first batch would be sent out on tuesday. cost me around $50 for 200 nymphs and 3 adults (for breading purposes). so we will see how that goes.. hopefully its not a scam. Id have to push my luck here.

wonder if i just dump the dubia into a bucket and just gutload with fresh fod, will they breed on their own? the man told me its a slow process... i think i better do more reading on the roaches. just hope they arrive on tuesday.

With heat, water, food, and places to hide they grow and reproduce like weeds. With nice warm temps like yours they should do well for you and reproduce very quickly.

can u refere me to any proper sites for setups? what i need? i have ordered only 3 adults.. wondering if i should have more than that

just one thing falls into my mind .. say a couplr escaped from the container ... and if im living at a ropical country .. my house will be invested? corect me if im wrong ..i need to be veeerrrryyyyy careful then.

Roaches have been known to infest tropical areas... so I would be careful...

Look at my blog! (Above my reputation in the top right corner of this box.)

to capture some flies for breeding, try putting some wet cat food, or ground meat, along with a little milk into a large jar. Wait. Flies will likely go in and lay eggs on the food. Cover jar with a piece of cloth or mesh. Wait while eggs turn to maggots.... in about ten days you'll have flies. this is not a good smelling method. one of the links within the blog entry below provides better method.

info about fly, stick bug and roach breeding can be found here:
https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/74-feeders.html

Set up a white sheet outside at night with a bright light shining on it (mercury vapor + black light works best.) Living in tropical Malaysia, I bet you would be AMAZED at what types of insects you have flying around at night!
I would kill to be able to field collect insects from where you live, forget the crickets :D
