New Panther DOA....

I know that I have learned a lot from this forum, so here's my experience to share:
Yesterday I purchased a 2.5 month old Sambava from Tom Kilgour of Kilgour's Chameleons. Tom did everything right - dropped the chameleon off late (8pm), shipped FedEx priority overnight, packed him with 2 heat packs, insulated container, etc. I had his cage all ready, light on, etc this morning, and opened the box to find a dead chameleon in a warm box. Needless to say I was horrified and called Tom immediately. We talked about it, and I described the condition of the box, which had nothing out of the ordinary about it, so the only thing we both think might have happened is that someone threw the box or otherwise improperly handled it during the 13 hours it was not in one of our hands. The box only had to go from Ohio to Indiana, so I don't even think it went on a plane.

Here's where the story gets better (for me anyway). Tom immediately let me know that he had one more baby from this clutch, but he was a bit older and bigger, and I am sure he was the one he was holding back as the pick of the clutch. He offered that one to me with no hesitation, which I believe really shows the outstanding character of this well respected chameleon breeder. I did not expect him to do that at all, but I'm truly grateful that he did that. In addition, he was willing to meet me halfway with the new little guy so we wouldn't have to chance a second shipment.
I know this was not easy for him to do, as this guy looks fantastic and will certainly be a great cham, yet he was willing to sell him to a customer to make a difficult situation better, even though there was absolutely nothing he did wrong.
I share this for two reasons: One, to let folks know that even with attention to every detail, tragedy does still happen unfortunately, and two, that Kilgour's Chameleons is absolutely a top notch, customer oriented breeder that is willing to give up his own breedstock to make things right with a customer who he could have just given the money back to.

Thanks Tom for your unselfish attitude - you have a customer for life and an instant recommendation for anyone else looking to buy a Panther.

Disclaimer -Tom did not know I was going to say this and I have received no monetary compensation for this endorsement...lol

Toms a good guy and his chams are top notch. I got a sambava myself from him, and he is beautiful. You wont be disapointed with your panther from him. Sorry to hear about the first one, poor lil guy.

I am sorry for the loss of a Chameleon, but really happy it was resolved in such an amazing way.
*giggle* I had a dream about Tom nite before last!, not really him but I was talking to someone and their phone rang and when we looked at the phone it said "TKILGOUR"!!
There is my silly story for the nite

We know Tom is the the man. I'm not surprised he would do something like that for you. :) Our forum sponsors are good people.

That is very commendable business on Tom's part. It's nice to know that he was really willing to correct the issue even though it wasn't his or your error. It does make is even more difficult on the chameleon breeders because now they have a loss from their clutch that they are not being compensated for. I would certainly continue to patronize and buy supplies etc. from Tom in appreciation for his efforts.

I received my Sambava from Tom in December. Dropped off and packed just like the one you received. I am just about an 1 hr or so further away then you. Also as I recall my weather was colder then what we are currently expecting... so I have to agree with Tom.. I don't really thing it was a weather issue. My experience was perfect... my Sundance climbed right out of the box and went into his new cage.

I am so sorry for your experience to have DOA.... Yes Tom is awesome about his customer service... He texted me at 10:35 just to make sure my baby arrived by 10:30 as he was supposed to. Very upstanding guy! You know we might even have brothers! My guys hatch date is 8-20-11 :)

Thanks everyone for such kind words. It was so terrible to hear that the chameleon didn't make it. I only had one option and that was to make Chris happy. I would have gladly refunded him his money, but he really wanted a Sambava. The male I gave him as a replacement was my personal Sambava from the clutch. It has to be terrible to open a box and find a dead chameleon. In my experience, DOA's are a freak thing. I actually had several chams shipped to me this week with no problems. All the chams looked great and made it through the cold weather fine. As a matter of fact, I actually have never received a DOA from anyone. After checking my records I found that this is the second chameleon I have ever lost during shipping and we have shipped quite a lot of chams. I guess the harsh reality is that this is a risk we take shipping chameleons or anything else for that matter. I truly do not know what killed this chameleon. The heat packs were warm, the box was the typical white box, insulated, with arrows and perishable warnings. I had holes for ventilation and the chameleon was in a dixie cup w/ paper towels for padding. The cup was also secure and surrounded with plenty of padding. I just cant figure out how this happened.

Yep, they are brothers with the same D.O.H.

I am new cham owner ( veiled now ) but me and my fiancee would love to eventually get a panther once we get settled in our new home. Reading this just made up my mind of where we will be purchasing our new family member when it comes time. :)

You're right! We have brothers! Hatch date is same!
We'll have to compare photos from time to time.... I'll get some of my yet unnamed guy soon and post.

Maybe I'll name him Woody...lol... I was going to let my two oldest kids submit 2 names each and then have a family vote, but maybe I should stick with the cowboy theme too!

Thank you, your comments are so kind. Unfortunately, I will not be at the Pomona show, I would love to meet you too. I wish I could do shows at great locations like that. I find it hard just attending our local shows here.

This is sad, I went to go mist the cage where the Sambava was. I forget he wasn't with us anymore and is in Cham heaven. Such a shame. :(

Yes there is Tom. This just shows how much you care about the babies you breed. Thank you again for being such a upstanding breeder.

Just lost my Nosy Be during shipping, we have to assume he's dead by now with how cold it's been. So I feel for you both. But clearly Tom is the awesome guy we all knew he is anyway, which is great.
