Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Veiled Chameleon, Female, 1.5 to 2 months old, I just got her 2 days ago
Handling - I only grabbed her a couple of times when I cleaned her enclosure
Feeding - She's on a cricket and mealworm diet, gutloading the crickets with flukers orange cubes, and she eats 5-10 daily (for the past 2 days)
Supplements - Dusting the crickets with fluker's calcium w/ Vitamin D3, only done it once, just bought it today
Watering - I use a spray bottle (haven't bought a misting or fogging system yet) and I try to use it 3-4 times a day
Fecal Description - Only seen 2 droppings (substrate hides some, I presumre). She has been seen by a vet, but hasn't been tested by parasites.
History - She belonged to a female friend of mine, given to her by her ex-boyfriend. She had her for 22 days, about half of which she was completely unconcerned with her. She had no lamps until about a week ago, when my friend's sister bought her a couple of 50watt bulbs (day and night heat).

Cage Info:
Cage Type - 5 gallon glass tank with a stainless steel mesh top.
Lighting - ZooMed double lamp with uvb 5.0 and 50watt heat bulb at least 10 hours a day, switch off uvb and heat, turn on a night heat lamp (50watt) until the next day.
Temperature - Top is at around 85-90 degrees during the day, bottom between 80-85. At night it goes down by about 10 degrees
Humidity - I haven't found a hygrometer yet, so I don't know the humidity levels.
Plants - 2 silk plants and one 6ft long fluker's bendable tree branch.
Placement - Tank is located next to my desk, not directly under the ceiling fan, and pretty far away from the air vent. No one comes into my room. Tank is at around 3ft (height of my dresser, where the tank is).
Location - Edinburg, TX (South Texas)

Current Problem: I have noticed that she will raise her head sometimes when she's sleeping, then she will open her mouth, and sort of snort. This wakes her up for a bit, then she settles on a branch again, and falls asleep. This head raising can happen for more extended periods of time (I'm looking at her raised head right now). She also looks like she's going to throw up after she's done with the head raising (opening mouth, ventral side moving in a wave-like pattern). Another thing is that I sometimes see her sleep during the day, even with the heat lamps on. I bought her off my friend because she was going to just get rid of her, and I'm very worried that there is something wrong with her!

Here are some pictures, best quality I could take since my actual camera is without a memory stick. First is her tank, second is her sleeping on the branch, and third is the head raising while still asleep. It sounds like she's sneezing every now and then.

Welcome to the forum. This is a good platform which can help you in getting good feedback on your lovely animal.

For your issue: Sounds like some kind of respiratory problem.

I see three main issues here from your description:

Feeding: you should use calcium without D3 at every feeding. With d3 only once a week or every 2 weeks. Over supplementation can be counterproductive.

Temperature: a bit too hot for a baby. I would reduce the basking spot to 80-85 the most.

Enclosure: it is usually recommended to use a screen cage or a terrarium with ventilation slots. Aquariums are not too beneficial as they might accumulate bacteria due to high humidity. Respiratory infections can be the result.

im pretty sure hes hot. if the lowest temp during the day is 80-85 he doesnt have a way to get away from the heat, specially cause glass tanks trap it in. i know when chams get hot they open their mouths to regulate their body temp. also the pic looks like hes trying to get air from out the top of the tank, when he lifts his head is it always up to the mesh? that may mean hes not getting enough airflow and can cause respiratory issues like Ulrich stated

She probably is hot too, but the signs you are speaking of point to respiratory infection. she is having trouble breathing it sounds like. That is why we do not recommend fish tanks because of the ventilation and also she had no lights whatsoever for three week? I would get her to a vet immediately as the infection will need an antibiotic to treat it. It will not get better on its own like a cold in humans. You will need to get her out of that tank and get a screen cage which is preferred or the proper terrarium. A;so remove the substrate and leave the cage floor bare. Get your basking temp down to the low 80's and ove3rall cage temp in the low 70's. For now you might be required by the vet to keep the temps up to help fight the infection though. Also, they do not sleep during the day at all unless they are ill or they are being bothered by the lights etc(which btrw, you do have the correct uvb bulb) also get a plain calcium without d3 and use that dailuy and the one with d3 twice monthly along with a multivitamin twice monthly

Chams don't require heat at night either so you probably need to get rid of the night lamp. They sleep better at night at room temp. That might be why it's always tired. Not getting enough sleep at night. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Welcome to the forum :)
i agree that it sounds like a respiratory infection, she needs to go to the vet and will need antibiotics in order to get better.
your temps are too high for her at this age, the ambient temp should be 72-80 and the basking 85, but with that type of enclosure its really hard to have temperature varients, a taller enclosure(screen preferably) is much better!!
she does not need the heat lamp on at night unless the ambient temperature drops below 50 degrees, it will disturb her sleep
this is a veiled caresheet, is all about the care veileds need, including supplements, lighting, humidity, enclosures, definitely check it out https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/veiled/
this is one on different types of feeders and how much they can make up of a chams diet https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/74-feeders.html
and this one is how to diet load your feeders to make them the most nutritious for your cham https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/75-feeder-nutrition-gutloading.html
please keep us updated on whats happening with her and i hope you're able to get her into the vet and get some antibiotics!!!
its awesome that you took her in and you found the right place for help and lots of knowledge that will help you give her the best life possible :)

Thanks for all the replies. I'm keeping her mesh off for now, until I can get a new enclosure, and moved the lamp further up to decrease the temp a bit. I'm heading out to buy the regular calcium as soon as I'm done typing this, and I'm looking for a vet that has a clue about what to do with chams. I know of one vet who went through an internship with a herp specialist, but he decided to go with cats instead  I'll definitely be keeping the night light off and see how it goes, and I'm talking to one of my professors who has a PhD in herpetology, hopefully he'll know of someone who can help. I hope she can get better despite the lack of care before she got to me

where are you located? if you let us know where you are located a member from around there can let you know if they know of a good vet near there

here is the list of known reptile vets, there are others but this is just a short list:

I'm in the Rio Grande Valley, think as far south as you can get in TX. I tried looking in a couple of herp lists, but couldn't find anyone closer than Corpus Christi (a 2 hour drive that I cannot make because I work and study full time)

what i would do is post a thread asking for a vet recommendation near Rio Grande Valley, it will be see by alot of people as a new thread and you could even message some of the moderators asking if they know any owners from around there that could give you a recommendation :) i think thats the best way to go! ive seen other owners to that and they found a great vet thanks to another member in no time! :D

you're very welcome, anytime! some of the moderators to ask would be Laurie, Trace, Ferretinmyshoes :)
those are the ones i can think of off the top of my head lol

So she started doing a lot better. Moved around, ate normally, stopped making that noise, and seemed overall like a healthy cham. However, the one issue that I still see is that she will close one eye and keep the other one open, or sometimes even close both eyes (with lights on). Last night she got startled when I started misting around her, and she did this "reaching" thing where she tried to climb somewhere, but she couldn't find anything, and she fell. It was only about 10 inches, and she seemed fine, but I observed her for a while just to make sure. Then this morning I turned on the lights, misted her enclosure, and she didn't open her eyes, but she started moving. She was climbing on a branch, and she ran out of holds, so she fell again (this time about 5 inches). After she got back up and climbed again, still with her eyes closed. She is still in the glass tank, because the pet stores where I am don't have cham enclosures, I simply don't have time to build one, and the one that I ordered is in the process of shipping in. The temp inside ranges from 70 to 80, and she's eating gutloaded crickets (fluker's orange cubes) and I spray them with a calcium spray before feeding. She gets some mealworms too. Everything else is similar to before.

i think she really needs to go to the vet, a respiratory infection can move to other parts of their body like their eyes and can cause serious problems and need vet help. even if shes stopped making the noise, if shes not using her eyes i recommend a vet visit!!

the ARAV Find a Reptile Vet site lists at least one in Brownsville which may be closer; there are others listed but i don’t know that area well enough to know if they might help.

even though it says “zoo vet” many times they might see herps on the side for the public, or certainly refer you to someone else nearby.
