New Jacksons Owner

New owner here from Oregon! I saw this chameleon info list on someone else's post and thought it would be very helpful if I filled it out myself. Any help would be very appreciated, thanks.

Chameleon Info:

Your Chameleon - Jackson's, Male, not sure of age. He has three horns and his body is about four inches long. I have had him for almost a week.

Handling - I try not to handle him very much, I have had him out three times, usually when I am doing something with his cage.

Feeding - So far I have just fed him crickets. I put about 5 in daily. For the first few days they were feeding on an apple but I just switched to carrots. I could definitely use some help in this department.

Supplements - My local pet store did not have the best selection so I was hoping for some suggestions so i could place an order off the internet.

Watering - I just received a little dipper in the mail and am about to set it up tonight. I have a cup with a hole in the bottom on the top of his cage that I fill with water and he usually gets water from that. I mist him about 3 times a day for a few minutes each time. I have seen him drink, and earlier today he seemed to be bathing himself in the dripping water.

Fecal Description - I have only seen a couple but they have been solid followed by some gooey white bird poop looking stuff at times. I have a big plant in there that makes it difficult to see now so I haven't seen one in a few days. He has not been tested for parasites as long as he has been in my care.

History - The only history I can provide is that he came from a pet store that has a terrible chameleon setup. Even as a new owner I was able to recognize this, and I feel as though I rescued him from the shop. I am trying to get friends to adopt the rest of the chams in the shop but so far no luck.

Cage Info:

Cage Type - So far he is living in a screened cage that is 1.5'x1.5'x2.5'. I am planning on upgrading as soon as possible. Any suggestions would be great. This is the same cage that four chameleons (now three) were living in at the shop.

Lighting - I have a ReptiSun 5.0 that I leave on all the time, and a regular household lamp that I put on during the daytime.

Temperature - The cage floor is high 60s, towards the top it is mid 70s. To be honest I don't feel that my thermometer is sufficient for taking these type of readings. I am planning on picking up a new one at the pet store this weekend.

Humidity - I do not know what my humidity levels are. Any suggestions on how to maintain humidity level, and a good tool for measuring would be much appreciated.

Plants - I have a large Ficus Benjamina that is the centerpiece of his cage.

Placement - The cage is located on a table in a backroom. The top of the cage is at about five feet. I have a fan running in the room constantly.

Location - Coastal Oregon

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

beware chams, and this forum are addicting.

Sounds like you have a male xanth jackson cham. probably a 5-8 months old.
Pictures of him would be great.

For watering, they love water. As he is a montane species, he needs higher humidity, cooler temps, and alot of water.

Are you leaving the UVB bulb on 24 hours a day? If so, dont. they need a 12-12 cycle to sleep, and lights on at night wont help.

For supplementing- Jacksons dont need alot of it as compared to other species, such as veields and panthers. Others who keep jax will chime in here soon im sure.

for gutloading- find blogs by sandrachameleon. she is the best on what to feed the bugs.

Also for the cage, bigger is always better. most use a 2x2x4 screen cage for adults.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I agree this is totally addicting!

I will post pictures when I get home from work, I am about to step out.

I am going to get him a cold air humidifier soon, but for now I mist him a few times a day, and I just set up a little dripper that seems to work pretty well.

So for lighting.. I just leave them on during the day, and nothing on at night? How do the two lights work? I have a ReptiSun 5.0 and a regular house light.

I will look into sandrachameleons blog tonight as well. Thanks again!
