New Chameleon Parents have mister and lighting??'s

Elenor the Cham

New Member
We are in the market to buy a mister for our chameleon, Elenor.

We have read several posts but can not come up with a concrete solution. Which mister do you guys recommend as one of the best in the market? :)

Also, what are the "rules" on the light situation? Are supposed to leave the red light on all day? or do we shut it off at some point? the white light?

Our home gets pretty cold throughout the night.

Thanks for any and all input you guys can give us.

Have a great night!!:D

Mist king. You dont need a red light ever. two bulbs, one that emits uvb rays, and a basking light, which can be a regular house bulb from home depot or walmart, like waht you use in your lamps. The uvb bulb used by many is a reptisun 5.0
Light schedule 12 on, 12 off.
As long as your home never drops below 60 at night you are good. they dont like light at night, just like we wouldnt when trying to sleep. If your home does drop below 60, use a space heater or turn your heat up. they actually like a 10-15 degree temp drop at night to sleep.

Thanks!

The white light we have is a UVB light (recommended by the pet shop were we bought her). The box of the red lamp reads 100w infrared heat lamp. :/

So do you guys program the mister for overnight?

Thanks!!!

YOu dont need to mist over night. only during the day. Your red light is gonna make your cham too hot. Most of those red bulbs are for desert lizards, not chams. Just put in a regular house bulb. Most chams dont like temps over 85 to 90, and sometimes 90 pushes it. Put a 50 or 60 watt bulb in, 100 is way to much for her.
Have you ever filled out the how to ask for help form? You can put all your info in it and people on here can make suggestions to improve oyur cham and you!

I think most here would say " don't trust the pet shop". Is your " white light" a uv linear 5.0 reptisun? Seems to be the standard.
Red light?, you will probably be better off with the house 60w bulb as Camimom stated previously.

I have read to not mist right before lights out and I normally don't during the night

Most people dont mist right before lights out so that their chams have nice drier plants and things to sleep on. The lights we keep on them helps to dry the cages out in between mistings, and its harder for that to happen when you mist before bedtime.
I don't know about others, but my cham cage gets misted 4-6 times per day, depending on the temperature and humidity levels in my house.

true. it sometimes gets kinda dry here at night (to the point where ill get random nose bleeds) so if it is a dry night Ill give the plants (if he's not sleep on them) a quick misting

Your Chameleon - Veiled Chameleon, Female?, age ??. 4 days

Handling - We were recommended not to handle her because she will get stressed out. :(

Feeding - 10-12 crickets a day in the morning

How are you gut-loading your feeders? I don't know what that is??

Supplements - Zoo Med's Repti-vite 2x a week
Watering - Sprayer, 3x a day, and yes we have seen her drink or suck on the tree leaf

Fecal Description - We have not seen her dropping and she has not been tested either?

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. NONE :(

Cage Info:Cage Type - 24*24*21 screen all around with fake trees and limbs

Lighting - one infrared bulb, on all day (not anymore) and a white bulb on 12 hours

Temperature - a thermometer and it ranger from 80-90 degrees during the day

Humidity - the humidity marks as tropical, and we are constantly spraying when we are home, but very rare during the weekdays. we are buying a mister for that same reason tomorrow.

How do we control the mist at night with the mist king? Does it come wotha speacial timer?

Plants - NOPE, Should we?

Placement - NO vents and it is in a corner of my dining room, not too much traffic.

Location - Miami, Florida

We just want to know the basics on how to take care of our cham. We have never had a cham before and are concerned because we read different things in different websites.

Thank you for all your help.

my responses in green

Your Chameleon - Veiled Chameleon, Female?, age ??. 4 days How long is she, from nose to tip of tail, we can guess age from that

Handling - We were recommended not to handle her because she will get stressed out. :(

Feeding - 10-12 crickets a day in the morning

How are you gut-loading your feeders? I don't know what that is?? Gutload, what you feed the crickets to keep them alive, such as greens, carrots, potatoes, oranges, etc

Supplements - Zoo Med's Repti-vite 2x a week this is a multivitamin, should onlly do 2 x a month. you need plain calcium with no d3 and no phosporus for every feeding, and you need calcium with d3 2x a month
Watering - Sprayer, 3x a day, and yes we have seen her drink or suck on the tree leaf

Fecal Description - We have not seen her dropping and she has not been tested either? WHen you find her poops, they should have a solid looking brown part, and white part, called the urate attached to it, this is the pee, if it is white they are hydrated, if yellow or orange, is dehydrated, can also tell by th eyes.

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. NONE :(

Cage Info:Cage Type - 24*24*21 screen all around with fake trees and limbs

Lighting - one infrared bulb, on all day (not anymore) and a white bulb on 12 hours already made this suggestion

Temperature - a thermometer and it ranger from 80-90 degrees during the day if she is still young, they like sligthly cooler temps, like 80-85 during the day

Humidity - the humidity marks as tropical, and we are constantly spraying when we are home, but very rare during the weekdays. we are buying a mister for that same reason tomorrow.
