New Cham owner :) Questions

they just can lay eggs and sometimes there can be problems if they won't lay, they become eggbound. If we determine 100% if you have a female which I am pretty sure you do, I would call the lady and tell her. If you need to, return her and you can purchase a male from one ofour sponsors or look in the classified if you are looking for a male. If she disputes it, send her to us and we will set her straight!

lame, dont the colors suck on females? so i just need a cup of sand or something in there at all times?

females dont suck!!!

as they mature, they get orange and yellow and blue dots on them.

and when they turn gravid!! holy moly its pretty!!

you need a bucket, at least 12 inches deep, of damn sand or dirt. at all times.

the soil must be wet enough you dig a tunnel in and it not collapse.

Females can be beautiful too, but in my opinion there is nothing like the coloring of a male. Like I said I would contact the lady once we know 100% and tell her you wanted a male and she sold you a female.

i dont think im going to return her.. shes my first ever reptile so i want to do well with her. Plus if i have a female and do well with her a male will be super easy!

would like the bottom of a milk jug be alright to fill with sand? my exo terra is not the huge one..

she wasnt a breeder she was just trying to get rid of her bc she is moving out of texas so i cant really return her

Well then it looks like she is yours and you have come to the right place to get things on the right track! Still check her feet and if you are still uncertain then get close ups of the back feet and we will tellyou for sure. The bottom of a milk jug will be way too small. Hopefully if you keep her food intake low, temps low, you can prevent her from producing eggs. Obviously she never layed any with the previous owner if she thinks its a male!! I would still let her know.

heres another picture.

and what would low food intake be i gave her 4 crickets today

also how old does she look to you?

they probably didnt realize because they werent looking for it.

or, she just hadnt developed any yet.

yes, you do have to have a bucket in there. BUT, you can put it in the back part of the cage, and pt plants and such in front, youll never see it.

I find if you get a bigger cage, it helps. i have my girl in a 2x2x3 custom built cage.

because boys don't lay eggs!! We are not saying she has eggs right now, but at anytime they can produce them and sometimes it is hard to tell if they have eggs.

I think the op thinks we are saying she is gravid. I tried to clarify in the other post.

got ya.

OP- she doesnt look like she has eggs rightnow.

as i said, no spots, no colors.. and those neon colors my girl showed, she was gravid then.

I dont think shes mature enough yet to make eggs, and as shes underweight, probably hasnt been able to develop any.

okay cool.

jjust an update, i got the UVB light for it. and i will be putting a good size bucket filled with sand in there once she looks a little bigger and shes lookin alright right now... I have her already eating her crickets straight from my hand. any tips on making her more friendly and want to come out and how am i supposed to pick her up?

also to keep her from having eggs i should keep it in the low 80s and feed her less.. how much should i feed her. ive been giving her 4 crickets a day

Btw thanks to all of you all for helpin me out yall are amazing :D

Keep handfeeding. leave the cage door open and let her come out on her own.

you actually need to let her have a lay bin 24/7 becuase not all females show gravid colors when they need to lay.

not to mention, my female showed gravid colors the entire time she was working on eggs.

She also may not look fat and round when she has eggs. to avoid egg binding, its best to just keep the bin in at all times.

as for reducing clutch size or stopping egg production. I would feed her 4-6 bugs every other day.

keep the basking spot at no more than 83.

that schedule kept my female from making more than 38 eggs, and i plan to cut her back more so her retained clutch is even smaller.
