New cage!

hey everyone! I got my Cham, Milo, about two months ago. He has a small glass cage but I new he wanted something different so I decided to make him his own cage! It's not perfect, and I'm still adding some more sticks to give him more areas to climb up. I just am not sure yet how to cover the top. If anyone could help that would be great! :)

Can you cut a circle out of screen to fit the top? Then use wire or twine to attach it to the top of the cylinder by weaving it in and out of the edge of the top circle piece and the upper edge of the cylinder piece; kind of like lacing up a shoe.

You oughta put some sticks a little higher for it to climb, since the light is no longer inside. It will allow Milo to choose his space and temp when needed, and get more climbing space in the new habitat.

Once u put some branch, vine or sticks zig zag in the upper cage, then u can get some plant like potho to drape it down and cover the top portion of the cage.

Are you using a dripper too? The bottom looks like it will hold the water well [smart design by you]. And it's mobile too! nice!

Hi there :)

I made a really similar outdoor enclosure out of hardware cloth and plant liners for my chameleon. Warning, I'm no expert, but I simply used a couple of bungee cords to fasten the plant liners to either side of the hardware cloth. Cheap and effective.

I'm glad you took that light out of there, and, like others said, chams seem to prefer to crawl up as high as possible so adding some vines or plants higher up would probably be appreciated.

I'm adding more to his new home tomorrow! Another question! Can I leave him in there all the time? I'm going away for school and I'm not allowed to have animals so I thought maybe if I keep him in there I could have him with me without anyone knowing. I can't figure out how to keep the crickets in there though, they keep escaping.

Someone more informed than me will hopefully be able to tell you about the cage size requirements for your chameleon. In general though, yes it's fine to leave a chameleon in their cage all the time excepting cage cleaning, doctors visits, showers, or whatever other times you obviously need to take them outside of the cage. It will still need to have UVB lighting and constant misting, though.
As for the bug escapees, you can wrap aluminum wire (the type they make window screens out of) around the hardware cloth to keep everything inside.

Buy small crickets and keep them in a large Cricket Keeper, then feed them to your cham using a feeding cup or tray. The small ones [1/2" - 5/8 "] will be less likely to escape.

Do you have a uvb light or is that a mvb? And you should add some horizontal branches across and more foliage you had the same idea as me I'll show you a picture of my outdoor cages tomorrow when I can get a pictureafter work. Good job hat keep researching and tweaking it. You will get it right.

usually for veileds a 2' x 2' x 4' cage is recommended which is what my guy has. Milo looks young so I think you could get away with a smaller cage for now until he gets bigger

Good idea. I wasn't impressed w zoo meds "Big Dripper" as I couldn't control water flow very well so I made my own as well
I also added a tube to a Vicks Cool mist humidifier to blow into the side of the cage to increase humidity, but needed to cover the back and side of the cage with plastic to contain the humidity.

here's my outdoor cage just got the dirt today for them and I'm cleaning and planting them either tomorrow evening or Saturday

Here's my DIY Dripper.. Drip container set over a few Bromeliad cuttings 'Neoregilia' as they have nice deep cups. The overflow from the broms emptys into a catch bowl that adds humidity. Fish tank w no hood sits right beside enclosure as well adding a bit more humidity to the air. image.jpeg
