New cage, HOORAY!!

By the way, since Dave Weldon is here, have you seen his drip trays???

They are awesome!

Oh yea, the bucket on the silver racks I had to adjust the shelves so it's closer to the drip tray, that way the water doesn't splash and end up on the carpet.

It works good for now, but the bucket is stuck in that one position.

OK...I see, I may try that. If you raise the 2 little cages a little and make it even with the other cages you can get one of those big shop lights and a big 48" reptisun 5.0 bulb and be able to cover both the cages, or at least the 2 small ones. I used to have a few little tube fixtures like you but I just started getting the big bulbs and fixtures because you need less fixtures and save $ on the electric bill ;)

yeah! that's what I was thinking of doing but it's a pain to raise those things. I dunno if you've ever tried it.

Why don't you go to Dave's meetings? I'm going there on the 24th.

I just hack sawed the black one and my hand was hurting halfways but I'm still working on the whole setup thingy.

I'm gonna get the double 4ft shop lights and put plant lights on one and reptisun on the other.

Check out Dave's drip tray here:

PS

I'm gonna go to bed soon (gotta wake up at 5am for work) but I'd love to see your setup! Pls post em when u can

Howdy Wendy,

Things look like they are coming together :).

You may have already posted it somewhere else, but what is the make/model of the UVB tube? Be sure that there isn't any glass or plastic between the tube's surface and your chameleon's skin. I think you'll be better-off without the red heat lamp. If you need more heat than a 50w-100w white incandescent then it would be better with more white lights instead. Most keepers find that one white flood positioned to produce the desired basking temp does the job :). This is part of the fun of "tuning" the setup :). For starters, stick your hand right at the basking spot for 1 minute and if it feels hot, you might need to raise the basking lamp. Burns are a real bummer :(.

Thanks Dave! I have two UVB tubes, one is a Reptisun 5.0, and the other is a plant grow light. No, no glass or plastic, the cage top is totally screen.

I think you are right that I need to raise the basking lamp, as I noticed a couple of the closest tree leaves got a little crispy today in the new setup. The ferret cage was much taller, I don't know why I didn't think about the fact that the basking spot is now closer to the lights. I bought some ceiling hooks and chains at Lowes today so I can hang the basking lights instead of resting them on top of the cage.

I was going to replace the red flood with a white one once it burned out, but if it's better to get rid of it I'll just do it now. Yeah, the single 100w incandescent didn't get the cage warm enough, and Joyce slowed down and stopped eating for several days until I raised the temp. She's been great since I added the red one and the temp went up, so I can just look for the same strength in white instead. Maybe I can sweet talk the pet store into letting me exchange it, since they refused to let me return it.

Now that I am no longer struggling to get in and out of that crazy screen-covered ferret cage, the fine tuning is pretty fun! :)

Im suprised your having trouble raising it. First you have to take off the shelf, just push it up. Then on those black things it says "top" and "bottom" and in the middle it clips together try and force it out...if you cant use a flat head screwdriver or something. Once you take them out just clip them wherever you want them. The reason I know all this is because when I had the rack together...I had to raise the shelf because it wouldn't fit my large cage. I would go to the meetings but Torrance is far,I may go to the super show though.

Brian

I know that, it's just too much work getting all those things out and then you have to keep the shelving straight before mounting them to the brackets.. believe me, i was sweating up a storm..

When are you going to the supershow? Sat or sun?

Wendy, is she gonna get some sun? or is she totally indoors the whole time?

PS

Sorry for hijacking the thread..eeks!

Thanks :)

She'll get some sun on the weekends when I am home during actual daylight hours and can get her out there. Otherwise she's pretty much indoors. And with Washington weather, "sun" is a fleeting thing anyway!

Great! They love the sun & it's very good for them. Don't forget to supplement with D3 if she's indoors most of the time though and yeah I would raise the basking bulb so it isn't sittin on of the screen. My female veiled doesn't do that though only the males but it's good to just raise it just in case...:)

Oh and my female veiled knows when it's time to sun too. She would actually move and go to that spot that the sun hits.. They love it!

I do the calcium with D3 twice a month, and am trying to decide if I also need to do the no D3 calcium now and then because I gutload the crickets with the gutload from cricketfood.com that has added calcium, and also give them the "gel water" with added calcium. Superworms get gutloaded the same way (except no gel), just not the silkies since they need the mulberry food instead. I think I asked in a thread somewhere, but never got an answer.

Yeah, Joyce doesn't walk on her top screen either, but you never know when she will suddenly decide to give it a try!

I would still give her calcium without D3 (the green container) once a week, some poeple use it more, like 3-4 times. I would probably coat lightly twice a week since she's young. I use cricketfood.com's gultoad also and its great. Im thinking about trying there calcium also.

Brian

There was a post a few weeks ago, that said it was ok to put calcium in the silkworm chow. I started doing also and it seems to be working out fine.

I just ordered their calcium along with my latest order of gutload, it looks like good stuff. That would be an easy schedule as well, calcium once weekly, but alternating D3 with no D3.

I found thats it helps to keep a calander where the chams are at...especially when the get older as they only need calcuim with D3 twice a month.

Brian

P.S when did you place you order with cricketfood? I placed my order on April and still havent recieved it.

I just placed mine last week, but noticed that they have a statement up on the website right now that it can take up to 4 weeks for an order to ship due to scheduling issues right now. They've always been reliable when I've used them in the past.
