Neelix's new cage

Hi,

Got Neelix his new cage today :) Although a lot of people suggested a screened cage, we couldn't make it practical, so we have an extra tall exo-terra. We plan to get him a screened cage for days when it might be nice enough for him to go outside, or when the conservatory is an appropriate temperature.

Here are some pictures, comments and suggestions are welcomed. His basking area is too hot at the moment, but I think that might be where the rest of the cage is getting to temperature- I'll keep an eye on it.

What are the measurements please? I have heard about these and they sound great, but I have never seen them stocked anywhere!

cage looks great! I would change out the red light for a white one. Housebulb will do. The white simulates the sun but the red is unnatural.

You should have got a screened cage. They like to climb high my chameleon loves the screen he sometimes sleeps upside down on the screen. Plus they need fresh air and they can't get that from gass only screen!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D

Thanks for nice comments :)
Neelix is veiled. The plants are ficus and an umbrella plant.
Will a house bulb really kick out enough heat for him? Will the red light cause him stress?

They will be fine, terrariums are designed to allow fresh air flow throughout. While it wont provide as much as screen would, it will be plenty for the cham.

I love the exo terras, i have the same one as a matter of fact! Cage looks good, but like others have said swap out that red bulb for a regular house bulb :)

Unfortunately, it's rarely warm enough here for a screened cage to work (in my opinion anyway). Also, I had nightmares about my cat managing to get in somehow. There's a mesh roof on it for ventilation and I know he's safe from curious cats :)

I just had another thought, here incandescent light bulbs aren't available anymore- they're banned by the EU. so would any energy-saving lightbulb work?

Do they still sell floodlights?
A PAR20 50W floodlight will also work great, i use them as well without issue.
You must be careful with them though as they can get hot. Simply just raise the lamp to keep it off the screen and watch your temps.

I'm not sure, I'll have to ask my boyfriend. I might also speak to the guy at the reptile shop & see what he can recommend, he owns Jacksons so he might have some tips

I wouldn't ask a shop, if you ever have questions pop them on here, I find shops have a more generalised information and chameleons need specific requirements where as beardies an some other reptiles you can get away without perfect conditions
