I am not sure if my baby cham is drinking or not, i spray the cage heavily with water 3-4 times for about 2 minutes each session. How can i tell that he is not dehydrated?

his urnates should be white any yellow and its a little dehydrated....also leave the room after you spray...they ussaly drink better in privacy...well mine does anyway...also try standing a foot away and spray him directly with a soft fine mist....make shure the water is very warm...i doubt you would like a suorise cold shower???

i doubt you would like a suorise cold shower???

but i bet dave doesnt like crickets and worms ether! :p

but seriously
i would spray the devil out of his cage then leave and he should drink on his own ,( as long as you have drainage and everything, and its a proper setup)

Dave, when chameleon poo, he also pee at the same time.
you'll normally see 2 parts of poo. the usual black or brown turd and a white paste. that is his urate.
If you can only see the black part, usually the urate got stucked between branches and separated from the poo.

i just went and looked in his tank, i saw poo in 3 different spots and every one has, it looks like its stained white on top. Like white wall paint

If its white then your ok, hes hydrated. If its any other color that can indicate an issue, either dehydration and so on. if you say its white then he must be drinking even if you dont see him drinking. As many have said before they can be shy when drinking, and in most cases keepers consider it to be a real treat to see thier cham drinking. I see the little fearless ones drink more often they the older one. If it's possible to post pictures of the droppings you will get a more accurate diagnosis from the experienced keepers.

I have noticed in the past few days several of your post, and feel you may like the search feature on the forum. Most of your issues and concerns have come up in the past and are on going threads already in existance. That way you dont always have to wait for responces. Good luck to you and your new baby, your doing great.;)

Very glad to hear good news then, major relief heh, the last thing i wanna do is kill my first baby cham :( Jason, you really seem to know whats up with these retiles which is good for a lot of people like me :) I never seen my cham drink before but he catchs and eats crickets all the time when im watching. Also i think my cham has gotten very comfortable with me being around. If i put my hand in there he will immediatly start walking over to me and try and get on my hand. I guess this is a good thing :)

Dave,It is great that your cham has takent o you but that may very well change as it grows older. Be aware that handling causes major stress which CAN result in death.

What is your setup? I ask if you are using a tank or if you have something open air vent like a reptarium? I have a reptariuma nd while Leo will lick the leaves form the dripped sometimes, he prefer to liuck the back wall, which I have covered in black garbage bag. It takes him at least 2 min during hte mist to realize Im offering water and then he waits until Im done and walk away. Within 5 min he is over licking the wall up. I make sure I saturate that spot since he uses it often enough. he also licks the vines as well. Misting should be built up and causing dripping to trigger his thirst. :)

Yes betty i am currently using a 20 gallon glass tank but i built a new cage with screen enclosure to switch my cham to. Hes ready to be switched just i have a problem with the feeding. The crickets are very small becasue my cham is a baby so the crickets fit right threw the screen holes! lol. to stop this from happeneing sometime this week im gonna buy 2-3 more layers of screen to put on it so the crickets cant jump threw the screen holes. i also need to learn how to cup-feed so he can keep eating while in his new cage

Thank you Dave for the kind words. I don't really consider myself to be an authority in chameleon care, I do however pay attention when the more experianced, knowlegable keepers give advice. I have only had chameleons in my life for the past 6 months, I do tend to get extreamly involved in my hobbies, and become obsessed with knowledge, I dont like to find myself in bad situations that may have been prevented with a little effort on my behalf.;) You will learn all you need to know about chams here on this great forum. Remember the only stupid question is a question that doesn't get asked, so ask away.;)

Good luck, Jay

clear cup that is about 3-4 inches tall at least. I use a clear so that he can see whats in it from wherever he is. Put some crickets, worms whatever in it, and offer it to the cham, same time every day. I tie mine to a branch with some velcro within his basking area so he can see them. I shake the cup a little to get whatever is in there moving around to catch his attention as the roaches will hide under everything else.

This is what I do. Others might have different ways. Works for me.:)

Glad you are getting a new tank.

Those must be some tiny tiny crickets. They do offer finer screen lids. Shop around, but if you are trading up (which is totalyl recommended) then I wouldnt worry about it. Try cup feeding and the crickets, especially that small, wont be able to escape.

Also, try offering some supers, silkies, hornworms, and dubias if you have the option.:)

No, it should be open.. Like a deli cup.. something like what potato salad would come in? Just leave the lid off. and I make a slit at the top on the side and slide a velcro strip through and attach to branch.

Scroll down til you see my cage. Look towards the top on the right side and you can see my cup for him.

You can use lkie the bottom of a 2 litter, cut the last 3-4 inches off..but these tend to have sharp edging and might hurt the chams tongue if they miss..

You can also order delicups if you do insect orders. I know most places ship em in them.
