Nasty Water

no no its just the smell of the repti safe, i just assumed it would ware off, i decided im just going to purchase large ammounts of distilled water

Consider buying a distiller. I bought one that can do a gallon at a time. I usually run it over the weekend to build up my water supply but obviously can distill a gallon anytime I need one (it takes about 5 1/2 hours).

I paid just about $100 for it. I figured if I had to buy RO water for 50 cents a gallon, at 5 gallons a week it would pay for itself in a year.

Here's something else you can do, if you already have a mist king you then have a reservoir . You can use ro or distilled water in your reservoir, drain the used water , from your drip tray, into your reservoir, then using a cheap , usually less than a dollar, inline fuel filter, between your res and mist king pump. This will filter out any particulates from the water, (cricket legs/poop, or any other small items), and stretch your water a little further. I have a few friends who do this after seeing my aeroponics and hydroponics garden setups using the same method. We have tested the water quality and there is little if any change after even a week of recycling.

that would be a pain to set up and i would still be concerned, i think running my water through once. And just buying new water, is the safest option

Kitro, were there animals pooping in the systems you studied?

bechsgaard, check around. There's a "water store" in our neighborhood. We buy our drinking water there, it's RO.

The only reason I distill the water for my chameleons is to lesson the burden on my husband of carrying heavy water containers.

But, you can buy a big water containers (we have two that will hold 8 gallons...we usually only put 4 or 5 gallons in each). When the store is open, it's much cheaper to buy water. You have to do a prepay thing where you put the money in an account and then buy water based on what you have in the account, but the cost is, at our store, about 25 cents per gallon.

ive lived in toronto my whole life and never had issues with water.... you want bad water, go to america! the stuff stinks coming out of the tap

kitro - would you drink the water being refiltered in your system? horrible idea and in no way is a fuel filter treating any waste in the water. its a fine idea for PLANTS but not a ANIMAL! insert<>common sense

Nope and I won't eat crickets and meal worms. I don't want to get into any verbal disagreements, but I can assure you that with proper cage maint. The water is fine. It was one of many options I suggested for the op, due to her situation it was evident cost was a concern. While it was an option it isn't an option I would personally use, but anything would be better than the tap water she describes.

i hope you come to your senses. if you wont drink the water you give your animals then maybe you should re-think your practices.

I do drink the exact same water I give to all my pets, this discussion isn't about any water problems I have. But I guess that part of common sense has avoided you.

kitro its about the advice given by you.

please tell me how you test feces/urin contaminates in the water?

I think they are testing the plant water PPM and comparing results after recirculating with slight differences. I highly doubt anyone tested the water for bacteria ect. I apologize if I assumed and I'm wrong. I can see where you were going at in theory, but that I wouldn't practice or tell people to do.

Would you feed your plants run off that you ran through a fuel filter. I sure hope not. Just sit back and actually think about it.

No because we have specific filters for the recirculating water for plants as we only need to filter out large matter so they dont clog the high pressure pumps.

An inline fuel filter is nothing more than a very fine paper filer that will catch fine particulates that just so happens to use 1/4 inch connectors. Maybe i should have clarified it by saying that's it's not the best choice but a temporary option.

In another thread from the op I recommended buying an ro system and that wasn't an option, thus I suggested buying it for 25cents a gallon, which also appeared to not be an option, and I believe using the water conditioner isn't a great option as it has minimal effects. In the end the op decided upon buying the water which is great.

Yes I can read. So in hand you go above and beyond for your plants, but you would offer a suggestion of a filter to filter out just heavy particles then to feed to a the same water to a lizard. My point is If I urinated in a gallon of water and poured it through a fuel filter it basically did nothing in sterilizing the water. I know your helping and giving options I just like to call out the options not to use and why that is all. Nothing personal.

I would never temporarily use water that I collected from the bottom of my cage or drip pan ever i don't hunk anyone else should either. Reminds me of the movie water world LOL

I would never temporarily use water that I collected from the bottom of my cage or drip pan ever. Simple

I'm not taking it personal , I sure hope you don't pee in chunks :) I think I may have assumed that everyones cage maint. Is as anal as mine. And to correct that I will say the following so we can move on.

I do not recommend using my above mentioned option. Concerns have been voiced and they are reasonable. As I can no longer edit the post I will see if I can get a mod to remove. Sorry if I ruffled anyones feathers it was not my intent.

First of all, im a dude
second, technically if you refilter your water, its ok to use it once it has been filtered
but its not a good idea because, The filtration systems arent fool proof, the only filtration systems that can eliminate everything, also add and remove harful toxins and chlorines, so technically, you can, but its a stupid idea especially for a live animal
