I can't really contribute to the conversation, but last year I read an excellent book written by a journalist who discovered the world of mycophiles by accident.
Mycophilia: Revelations from the Weird World of Mushrooms by Eugenia Bone

Informative, funny, extremely entertaining, and very well written. I read a lot of "the history of", "the amazing true story of", and "the epic adventure of" type books, and this was one of the better I read last year. I highly recommend.
