I have many "hobbies", or maybe they are just interests?

Anyhow, Mycology is one of them.

Anyone else find fungi interesting?

Just thought Id share some pictures from today, and see if anyone else was into this type of thing.

I have not identified these yet, but I will if I have time. If you think you know the ID, please feel free to share. :)

(these first ones are all one species, at different developmental stages)

This one is new to me. I have not seen it here before. We have had an lengthy amount of rain recently.

I will post more pictures later. Please feel free to share your own finds here.

Nice! I know Xanthoman is big into this, so hopefully he will see this thread.

That "branch" looking one is pretty cool!

I found these on the front lawn of a relatives house. They were all evenly spaced, in a direct line with the evening sun!

I know very little about Mycology other than that I think is very interesting and one of those areas of knowledge I really want to expand one day.

For the reason you've placed in bold red above it is very difficult to get good information on cultivating without filtering though a whole slough of bad web sites and books on the subject seem to be just as difficult to come across.

Either way there have been many good studies on the health benefits of mushrooms and they seem very promising for further cancer and other health related research. Not to mention they are just very interesting and neat.

I really want to set up a terrarium with some of the really pretty odd types and also cultivate my own edible mushrooms. I think a forest floor display featuring ornamental fungi would look gorgeous. I hear it can be dangerous if you're not careful with the species as the spores can cause health issues...

sometimes, just occassionally, a good old fashioned library is a better research resource. Librarians are pretty good at keep the subject matter straight :)

My limited knowledge is cooking stuffed mushrooms for hubby. But I have to say those pictures are neat. I never thought of how varied and pretty they are.

I know Heather is a professor of mycology at the University of Nebraska, but I forgot her username. Perhaps someone can let her know about this thread?

These are a few from Costa Rica, the last time I was there.
