I gave some to a friend and have lost a lot of the babies along the way, despite being really careful with using clean items, etc, and am now left with three tubs and they are slowly growing.

I just hatched some from eggs - they sure are a lot of work! I bought the eggs from Mulberry Farms.
I have not had any luck getting moths from worms - they won't coccoon. They just get big and die. Is there something I'm missing? I use the chow as I can't find a Mulberry tree to strip of its leaves.

I separated mine and fed the larger ones on leaves (I have a small Mulberry tree) and those do seem to have grown more than the ones fed on chow. Have lost less of the ones feeding on leaves too. I remember reading somewhere that they more readily turn to cocoons when raised on leaves, but not sure how true that is! None have gotten big enough to cocoon yet. As they get bigger, it gets easier - they are a lot of work when they are so tiny you can barely see them on the chow!

I started a silkworm "project" at the end of April. I ordered eggs and chow. Well, I now have about 500 coccoons, 1000 silkworms, and about 20 hatched so far and mating. I read everything I could on these forums and got great information. EXCEPT no one seemed to mention how much work these little buggers are!! I admit, I didn't count the eggs at first and got a little more worms than I expected. But very few losses and only raised on chow. I am very excited to know if I can get viable eggs! After all this work - I hope so! I figure if I can get enough eggs, I'll only have to do this "mass production" about every 3 years. Well, that's my plan, anyway.

Yah I find even the big ones are work lol XD U cant just leave them like u can the horns... I failed terribly my first batch so this one im making sure to get out all the frass as soon as I can and try to not touch the silks XD Though... these probably wont make it anyways because by time I got them the other half of silkworms were dead.
