is a Panther chameleon bother by barking dogs and a tv? I just moved him out to our living room and he slept the rest of the day. I just got him 2 days ago. Also what wattage bulb should I use for basking? I had a 40w in then changed to a 60 watt. He's not active today. He did eat this morning before moving him to the living room.

You want to avoid moving him around too much while he's new. A high travel area like a living room could stress him out too.

Regarding the bulb, you'll need the correct wattage that gives you the heat needed. It's different for everyone.

Short answer, yes. The dogs (considered to be predators by the cham) will stress the cham out and therefore reduce his life span :( When it is time for lights out, make sure the room is completely dark or cover the cage. Chams need total darkness. As far as the basking light goes, what are the enclosure's temperatures?

You said he slept the rest of the day? Was it towards evening hours or in the middle or early in the day? If so, there might be a problem going on as I am not sure if you are aware, they do not sleep during the day hours. By moving his cage it very well could have stressed him out, and might cause him to not be active, but he should not be sleeping. If the sleeping during the day continues, you will have to look into something else being wrong.

My Panther

He's eating this morning. I think the dogs are stressing him out. He slept early evening yesterday

If the dogs are stressing him out can you move him to a room where he will not see the dogs? Getting a new chameleon and stressing him out as soon as he gets home is a disaster waiting to happen. Stress kills more chameleons than anything else.

If theres more than one dog and lively dogs above all you should consider moving him to another more calm room as mentioned above. I don't let my cham see more than one dog in the same room as his enclosure. I can see that he is bothered enough buy just that dog and she is just lying across the room, sleeping. When shes not around he moves more freely, just enjoying himself so if possible, no dogs should be visible from your cham's enclosure.
Good luck! :)

Thank you guys for your help. Tomorrow I will move him to the back bedroom. He seemed happier there. He seems to be doing better today.

Chams don't have great hearing so the noise wasn't the problem. However, all the movement of unknown "creatures" and the visual flickering light of the tv could be intimidating.
