My Dusky Pionus.

I love Pionus Parrots, they are one of the most mildest parrots to own. I have a male Dusky and a female White Cap and IMO sex of the parrots in this species does not matter in human contact and devotion like other species such as Greys. My lovely and rare dusky Pionus "Slater"

You rock!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your dusky is beautiful! How did you end up with him? They're pretty hard to come by.

I have a female WC pionus, about 15 years old, and she's awesome. She's the first parrot I ever owned, and I got her because they are known to be a great parrot for beginners -- absolutely true.

Are yours very active? Mine is mostly a perch potato, but super sweet to those she knows.

She started laying eggs about 7 years ago, and began feather plucking and barbering. I got her a "sock buddy" tshirt to stop the plucking and it worked well. When I take it off and she's in season she still plucks, but no longer barbers her wings.

Pionus are definitely underrated and under appreciated, and I suspect it's because their colours are not brilliant, and they're not the best talkers. Folks that don't even consider them are really missing out, as they are wonderful companions. I'd get more if I had more room, although I am quite a cockatoo fan as well. It would be a tough choice as to what to choose.

Thanks Lisa! I found a breeder in UT that had 2 babies and I wanted a male. I know they have been very hard to find but it was between the Dusky or the Coral Bill and I liked the Duskys colors better. My female WC Pionus is a very good and clear talker and she is such a sweetheart too. My Dusky was weaned by the breeder at 16 weeks old, he is the longest parrot baby I had ever had to wait for but his breeder abundance weaned him and I really liked that. Slater came to me talking and saying a couple of words and wolf whistling and he has picked up even more words. He is a very sweet Pi too. I always recommend Pionus to just about anyone wanting a layed back parrot. My WC girl dances on command and it is the cutest thing ever. I had a blue head for 17yrs and lost him from a fall in his cage. I still miss him dearly. I will always own a Pionus.

Interesting that you have two that talk, as they generally aren't that talkative. Mine said "hello" the second I met her, so she sealed the deal herself.
Are you planning on getting others? Is there a difference between the different types (are they subspecies?)? I heard the Maxis are not active at all, and the WCs are feisty, but I like all Pi's; would definitely love another. I've never seen any around here except for WCs, but a Dusky has always been on my list. Do post more pics!!!

They talk only maybe because they live in the same room as my Grey and even my Pineapple Conure talks being around my Grey. Greys are suppose to be one of the best talkers but I had a DYH Amazon that was some kind of talker and sang full songs. No plans for anymore parrots here as I have 6 total but they all love me unconditionally as I do them. I will surely post more pictures as it is so hard to find awesome pictures of a dusky Pi. You must post some of your baby also, I would love to see them

When I got my chatty Bare Eyed Cockatoo, my Pionus stopped talking. The 'too doesn't let anyone get a word in!
