My chameleon won't leave his basking lamp

I have a veiled chameleon and when I turn on his basking light he is always close to it and he opens his mouth cause he is hot what should I do so to make sure he does not over heat him self.
Should I turn the lamp off after a couple of hours or should I leave it on

Could you please fill out the "ask for help"form in the health clinic? We need to get all the details of your set up. Post a picture of your cage also. If he is opening his mouth, the temperature is most likely too hot. He should not be able to get too close to the light as he can burn himself.
