Mudskipper!!!

He he, I'm happy, i got myself a Mudskipper. Its a fish, that's kinda like a newt. Its cool. But I'd like some advice as to my set up, and how to improve it. He was previously being kept in freshwater. I've added a tablespoon of salt, and will continue to do so until I've reached brackish conditions (I've done this before, with brackish fish: AKA: PUFFERS!!!) Lol. Currently he is alone, in a 10gallon tank, with 1/3 land, and 2/3ds water. But the water is only 2" deep at the most. Should it be more? Ive been getting mixed reports. Any advice is welcomed

We have tons of walking catfish here in Central Florida. You are welcome to bag any walking in the streets during a rain storm. They are a pain when they decide to set up residence in your Koi pond.

Yes make it deeper. . Make it as deep as you can. They need both to be able to completly submerge and to be able to come completly out of the water onto a "shore". They are actually a fish after all.

You should also provide some rocks that he can get up on and perch.

What kind of salt are you useing?

Yeah, im keeping mudskippers and I would say about 6 inches of water. A slope of land is good but hard to make in a ten gallon. Lots of land though. Feed him crickets and small feeder fish.

Mhm, he has a log, and land he can go on. I'm using Instant Ocean Marine Salt. Its what I use for my marine tank, but because he was kept in freshwater I'm taking it reallllly slowly. I did this for my puffers. 6"? Okay, that worksout. Well, what I plan to do is when my marine fish get moved to a bigger tank then my little mudkipper will get the 33gal. I'll definately work on it tomorrow. He's eating crickets and bloodworms. I dont trust feeder fish as they are very very fatty, and he is only 2". This is great advice everyone! Good. He needs the trace minerals found in ocean salt. But don't take his salinity to full SW. Stop at the high end of brackish.

How about filtration? He will need a cycled filter. He can suffer ammonia poisoning without one. Google Nitrogen Cycle...just in case you didn't know.

No no, I know. lol. I've got several fish tanks, I've got a weak filter I'm using right now until I get paid then I'm getting him the new underwater Fluval Filters (they rock, really, they do, I've already got one in my turtle tank). I just didn't have enough water height, so today I'm increasing the water height and the land height. High end brackish...gotcha

Ha ha, no, I would imagine so. Lol. I just finished doing the enclosure. He's doing great. Lol. It was funny, he wouldn't leave me alone while I was working on the land, I kept having to shoo him away so I could finish. SOOO CUTE!!! Hopefully I'll be able to put him in the bigger tank soon.

my local petstore has HUGE ones, i only have a vertical tank though, i used to keep my puffs in it, now theyre in sw, how good would they do in a vert tank?

What is the footprint of the tank? If you had enough slanted stuff for them to climb and ledges it may work.

yeah thats what i was thinking, fill it 1/4 with water then have vines and driftwood (they are good climbers i hear) up the tank, its not long at all though...thats what im afraid of.

Well what are the dimensions of the tank?

Mhm, they are, they like to climb glass too, its weird. just make sure you buy a really really good water filter. (i had a 30gallon underwater Fluval in my 20gallon and there was only about 6-8" of water)

not sure of the dimensions or what ill even do with the tank, its just sitting there and i hate to see empty cages/tanks lol
