Hey, i know this question has probably been asked, but im going to ask it anyway. is it a bad sign if a chameleon has its mouth open?, thanks in advance
There are three reasons why a chameleon will keep its mouth open: they are too hot and are trying to thermoregulate, they have a respiratory infection and are cannot breathe properly, or they are trying to show aggression. What are your cage temps, basking and ambient? Is he opening his mouth when no one is around or when you come up to the cage?
When no ones around and my thermometers is currently not reading correct i have my heat thermostat turned up to 26°c and then his basting area.is a little warmmer he doesnt do it too often
IF its temperature issues try misting the enclosure. If he closes his mouth after that you just need to give him a cooler place thats all. If that doesnt work look into his diet and nutrition.
If temperature is an issue I suggest more live plants to better retain humidity and also a bulb with lesser wattage. A bigger cage with a better temperature range would be great too. So your cham can pick a spot where its cool when he wants to cool down and a warm spot when he wants to bask.
Also the well iterated constant misting. Make sure that you are giving him a nice FINE mist not just little showers.
If its too cold to ship check the garden sections of major retailers. I got 3 pothos plants in a inch container for $5 each. I had to buy pesticide free organic soil and repot them adding large river stones to the tops of the pots.
