Morphs?

Hi all! First off i want to say about this thread is NO ARGUMENTS PLEASE Okay so I just wanted to hear everyone's opinions on morph chameleons. I'll start. I think they are pretty cool. You get awesome colors and may learn new things through morphs. I also like them because I like to think outside of the box and I think morphs allow that. This applies to translucent veileds and panther crosses. Just curious about what you guys think.

I think it is great. Only thing is, that I wish there was more quality control in breeding morphs. Its a bummer when you are after a nosy be female and you get a ambilobe/nosy be hybrid. They show amazing color and are awesome like all other chams. But the breeder needs to keep logs on them.

Well, since you started this thread, just be careful with your terminology. In panther chameleons, for instance, a locale is the same as a morph. Any panther you get will be considered a morph. A combination of more than one morph, or more than one locale, is a cross-morph. And there-in lies the controversy.:)

That's true, I think it's best to buy a morph from a breeder that is keeping track of what they were morphed with.

Personally I think morphs are very interesting....It puts you outside of the ordinary...You take a step out the box...I definitely like the pures also....Its all about what u personally like...But vote yes for morphs...

"Pure" = Morph = Locale

See gesang's post...

I see no reason to EVER cross panthers!
With that being said look at these 3 brothers from the same clutch of Ambanjas.

"hybrid" is wat is meant

Well, not quite. Hybrids are crosses between species, or in the case of intergrades (crosses between subspecies), intra-specific hybrids-- none of which apply to pardalis locales as they are a single species.

"cross locality" Inter-species? hmm

who knows.

i don't see much reason for crossing locals unless your aiming for a very specific color combo or trait, even then that will take numerous attempts to achieve what you want and even harder to continue that trait genetically in further generations.

First, I'd like to say that I am a person who's other hobby is spending a lot of time researching dog's pedigrees and different breed's standards- I have a lot of respect for the individual breeds because of their purposes and diversity, especially the regional differences that occur (like we're talking about here.) I think it's an insult to the breeds to cross them and produce "designer breeds."
I feel that this last point applies very much to the topic at hand.

I really don't see much reason to breed cross-locales, in my opinion there is such an incredible variety of Panthers out there that there isn't a reason to. If people do still do it (as they will) I think it's important to keep very close track of what bloodlines are in the animal, so people buying the offspring know.

I agree with Sang, the only reason I would see crossing locales as acceptable is if you were bringing out a trait (ex. if a transleucent gene showed up in animals of two separate locales) it wouldn't be hard to justify breeding the pair.
