Monty (and I) learned that mantis are fighters

Monty had this dumb mantis in his mouth over 4 times, you could hear the crunch and it would still pull its head and arms out of his mouth!

I put the mantis in and had to keep prodding it with tweezers, I was too scared to touch it. I love bugs, just not mantis when they flare up like that.

When I "caught" the mantis, I just picked it up like I would pick up Monty and the mantis was okay.

Monty upset it and then got scared of this look

If I was a chameleon and I saw them bright colors if be gone in a flash! That's a nice looking mantid by the way.

The one in the pic or the vid? Lol the pic was from google, and the one in the vid was (i think a female, are they brown?) caught outside.

I had no other choice but to basically force him to be inside the cage with the mantis until he ate it, because i didn't want him to ignore it by hanging out with me and sleeping on his free range, then go to sleep and have it bite him.

Mantids are scary.

I've always wanted to try mantis with my Chams. I just have been afraid for one of my Chams getting hurt though! :\

LOL! I used to raise and sell exotic mantid species, that's actually how I got the $$ to by Smeagie and his cage set-up.

There are a few members here I recognize from the Mantis Forum as well.

I know how powerful they can be because I have had them draw blood from clamping and digging their sharp claws into my hand!!

Mantids are super effective preditors, and formidable fighters.

I would never try to feed an adult mantis to even my largest cham.
Even though they do eat them in the wild, and it's excitting to watch
(hence, why everyone makes a video :D ) there is an element of danger
to the cham (not to mention the poor mantis ;) )

I will not feed them either once they get big- Olive caught one butt first and it about ripped her eye turrets off  she kept "stealing " the adults as they walked on her outdoor f/r - I did not want her eating them , but once she got it in her mouth, I could not get it away from her - she is a brat - lol

I have been having this debate with myself for awhile now too! I've been raising up a mantis for Egon for the last month but since I've observed it's behavior I'm a little afraid to feed it to him.

Did Monty finally get it (I can't see the vid for some reason)?

I thought maybe he would just snap it up, but no, mantis are total fighters. I moved it to a branch vs the screen thinking a branch would make it stick less, but it didn't. The mantis actually struck at Monty. The aggressive little bugger missed.

I thought maybe it was cool because

a) Monty hasn't eaten in a long time (hunger strike)
b) Would be something exciting to watch.

I will never feed a huge one like that again! Too strong.

Yes they are mean aren't they!? I will only feed smaller mantises and less... mean bugs.

Monty got it. :)

As long as it isn't too big it should be okay. I honestly wouldn't feed it if it's any bigger than the space between Egon's eyes, because this mantis was big, and strong. Find a small mantis for him!

Last summer I was finding mantis everywhere but of course now that I have a chameleon I haven't found a single one lol

That's okay, I dont think most ppl realize how strong these little buggers are until they get one clamped tenatously around their finger
