Anyone into model trains?

I currently fly R/C planes and Helicopters (nitro/electric), and did the cars(raced on road/ off road, nitro/electric). I have been looking at some train sets, and wondered if anyone was into the hobby? Anyone have any advise...etc??

Thanks
-Jay

I had a train set when I was a nonate:D;)

Just sold my chopper sunday. Don't want to get hit with it again. Currently building a plane with a 10 foot wingspan:)

Talk to my husband, he has a model train given to his grand father or greatgrand father by the railroad when he worked for them. Pretty neat even the smokestack makes smoke.

You and my hubby like a lot of the same hobbies have you noticed. Do you by chance blow glass or do hot glass? Or are you a ham radio person?

Kev,

Do I smell a 42% Extra 260??

I have 3 in the works, one being an Extra 330 thats 90% complete. I fly the Helis mostly JR Vibe 90's, TT Raptors and I the T-rex electric line. I also love the planes as they are more aerobatical then ever!:)

Laurie,

I know we are like twin brothers different mothers...:D I have never had the chance to blow glass, but I was heavy into pottery (throwing on a wheel). If I ever make it out to Montana, your hubby will be MIA....:D

i flew competition 3D heli's "emphasas" on flew ! i dont do it any more i have a new hobbie its called a house ! !

i loved flying and i still have my vibe 90 but it now is just a center piece and a conversation starter. it still runs great and all works but, i just dont have time to take her up. i havent been in the air in over a year.

i sold my other 4 last summer and kept my flag ship. i miss it, but now im no longer a sponsored pilot, so pounding one into the ground is not an option ! :D

Cool Jeremy,

Always nice to have fellow flyers on the boards.:)

There are a few lipo nazis here on the forum, and I just couldn't convince them that fuel still had a place in the sport...:p

I doubt they have ever seen a 42% with a DA 150 flying knife edge 15' in front of them!:D

Hey my husband, who is a RC nut has a bday in July, want to sell that flagship?

I'm into trains, among other things, r/c anything, need a plane just have the heli now, got rid of most of my r/c cars and trucks. What are you wanting to know about trains? I've been into them for about 18 years now(longest of any of my hobbies). Nothing setup currently, but if I see something cool I can't keep from buying it and storing it away with the others until I can get a place where an entire room or 2 could be devoted to them.

I did HO scale trains from when I was little till about 9th grade. I was a member at a train club for a couple of those last years. I didn't have much room at home to run trains.... so my dad found a train club and we joined. It is the way to go. You pay dues but can run your train on a huge layout with other trains. Much more 'real' than just running in circles at home by yourself.

Elmhurst Model Rail Road Club is where I was a member.

Recently the bug bit me again. But I had the urge to go with the stuff my dad would never let me model.... G scale. The big stuff.

I got this engine on eBay for $202. That is a SMOKING deal LOL this engine was going for $500+ on other auctions. It is about three feet long and about 5-6" tall.

12oz new castle bottle to give some scale to its size.

IMG_0190.jpg

G scale actually has five scales within the scale but they all share the same size track. 1:32, 1:29, 1:24, 1:22.5 and 1:20.3 are the five scales. There are three main scales that are more 'mainstream' in the hobby of 'large scale trains'. So what this means... the 1:20.3 scale is what they call 'narrow gauge'. If you model that scale you are modeling mostly small scale rail roads from the early 20th century, things like logging railroads and small mountain rail roads. 1:20.3 has a pretty narrow focal plain in the hobby, a lot of small productions of models and a lot of one off's..... so this scale usually costs a lot since its very specialized. These trains are also larger than the other scales so they take up more room and need larger curved track for the trains to follow. The engine in the picture above takes a min. of 8' diameter track... and that is cutting it close, should be 10' or more. 1:24 is close to the right scale for the track. There are a lot of this scale in production and a bit more main stream. The 1:29 and 1:32 are even more widely produced. You'll find more models of modern rail roads in the more common scales since the scale is closer to the real proportions of the track.

Most people will think of G scale as 'LGB' This is a German model train company.... The trains are a bit more for kids and play.... and the scale is more narrow gauge, I think close to the 1:22.5 scale. This brand is NOT cheap and hard to come by since they went bankrupt a few months ago when the banks all started to crap out.

Bachmann is another big name. They have some really nice production 1:20.3 stuff, called Spectrum. That is the line my engine is from. Here is a Link to them.

The other cool thing about G scale? They have live steam models in this scale. People also make huge outdoor rail roads in the G scale. Sometimes referred to as the garden railroad scale. Google garden rail road or youtube it. Add 'snow' into the search and you'll see some cool snow covered yard layouts with snow blower cars and plows... wish I had a yard.... oh and money...

This is a good site for 1:20.3 scaled: Link.... can't find the link... when I do ill post it.

This is a guy who sets up little scenes and removes all real sized objects from his yard and takes photos of it. He builds all the buildings: Link

Summoner you pretty much stole that engine from where you got it, that is an awesome price for a G scale steam engine. I have a few HO engines I've paid more than that for. I've always wanted a garden railway too, but the cost and maitanance has always kept me out of it and into the HO scale. My collection has been aquired mostly from older guys getting out of the hobby because its too hard for them to work with such small things anymore. I have bought 2 of them out completely and currently have around 200+ engines, and about 1500 different cars from all different eras. I was lucky enough one of them gave me all of their old Model RailRoader magazines. I have every issue from 1972 - 1995 the oldest issue is from 1950 and is in black and white. I still have some of the subscrition cards from the older issues and they have always honered them for me. So if you're interested in a subscription to that magazine for like $16 instead of the $33+ their charging now let me know.

Edit: Ok, the subscriptions cards I have are for $19.95/year not $16, still better than $42.95/year it is currently(just checked the website)

eSnipe baby! :D:D

It was funny.... I asked the seller about how he was going to ship such a large model... so it wouldn't get broken in transit (from Pennsylvania to California via UPS ground....). And I was like 'ya know im not backing out... but this is really far......' and he was like 'well if you want to back out you can.....' LOL, I seriously LOLed at his reply.... I know I got a deal and was NOT going to pass it up. :D It came perfectly intact.

I like to snoop and watch for people posting up track. I found that anything more than $5 a foot isn't worth it..... I nabbed 12 one foot sections for $30 plus the shipping was like $10... just over $3 a foot... not bad! Now I need a power pack, and a 10' radius circle, some cars........ oh man... so much money can be spent its sick!

As for my HO... long story short I moved and left all of my HO stuff at the house I was living at.... the friend knew how much they all meant to me so she sold them to an old coworker of ours (for $60)..... He is the type of guy I would guess that would still have it all laying around..... I just need to get a hold of him (still works at my old job) and see how much he wants for it all... prolly over 6 grand in engines and cars.... A LOT of Kato engines, my only brass steam engine...... a bunch of Proto 2000 stuff..... man...... I need to call this guy up and see if he has it all still. I just sorta think "I almost don't wanna know" If he has it... GREAT... if not I'll be so bummed.

And yes I am a moron for leaving it all there..... but I had to move back to Chicago in a hurry and didn't have room for it all.:mad:

I have a rather large HO track set up with a slot car set up set into the scene that I can crank up and down from the garage ceiling. I have no current pics of it but ill take some this weekend if I think about it.

One of my favorites that I have is the Pennsylvania GG1. I would have to check who the manufacturer is, but it has pickups in the wheels like usual, but the overhead pickups can also be used. It is a pain to try and wire a setup for it to actually use the overhead pickups like the real version would use. I tried, to just make a simple loop, but it was too difficult. I have seen it once in G scale, it is amazing in that scale with all the details, but it was at least $2,000 for the one that I saw.

Here's what a GG1 looks like. (Not my pic)

I have never seen one of those in person but they look neat. I wonder if they have any still in operation?

I used to go to IRM (Illinois Railway Museum) when I was a kid... ya know I was just looking at their website and Apparently they have a GG1....... Maybe I have seen one in person.... Last time I was there I was in 9th grade and I spent most of the time in the diesel yard... and before then I was kinda young and don't remember too much specifically.

WOW that thing is 480,000 lbs! 240 tons..... I guess that is what most engines way... but still!

That pic is from 2005 according to the photo, so I doubt they had it when you went as a kid. It looks in decent shape, but definitely needs restored in that photo. It's been 4 years, they may be done restoring it by now, so maybe it's on display currently.

I like it's looks and I just like that my model versions roof pickups are actually usuable, you can still buy models of them but most of the time the overhead pickups don't actually function, except for going up and down.

Edit: Whatever happened to Jay??? Haven't seen him post in this thread since he first started it, and it veered into R/C planes:p Have you decide not to get into trains?
