mites?

what are mites? what do they look like? how bad are they? how does one rid a chameleon of said mites?

my guy has on one of his horns a black rectangular shaped thing/stuff that resembles mildew. i soaked a q-tip in saline solution and rubbed at it, and found that if i rubbed hard, some of it kind of came off. now my chameleon(fletcher) blatantly did not enjoy this process. do you think it is mites? is there a decent way to get rid of them if it is? preferably one that will not greatly annoy him?

no not mites... mites are very small, white, and move.

could he have rubbed his horn on something that was black? My panther cham sometimes gets some black on his head but it rubs off! I think it is from climbing around on my patio screens and they are dirty because it is outside.
