Not sure if this worked by fluke or not but I know MistKing recommends that you place the reservoir above the pump. I never designed mine that way and recently discovered a trick that seems to make it self prime even if the reservoir is level with the pump or slightly below it.
This is my pump and reservoir, as you can see, it's definitely not placed above my pump.
My self prime adaptation. A T joint and the plug that comes with the system. Made sure that the one open leg on the T joint is touching the bottom of my bucket. Basically works like a siphon as far as I can tell. Reservoir ran out today and after refilling it and connecting it to my pump when it was lower than the pump, it primed and pressurized with needing the bucket to be above the pump.
